Newcastle discussing another deal with MLS side after Miguel Almiron blow – Report

MLS side Charlotte FC look set to miss out on Miguel Almiron to Atlanta United, but reports suggest they’re also interested in another Mag.

Newcastle are in ‘advanced talks’ with Miggy’s former side after Atlanta offered a package worth £10m for the Paraguayan, meaning Charlotte are set to miss out on the 30-year-old’s signature.

However, the North Carolina side are said to be interested in another fringe player who returned to the side in last weekend’s FA Cup win over Bromley.

Charlotte FC eyeing another Mag?

According to TBR, Charlotte FC are exploring a potential loan move for Newcastle United full-back Matt Targett.

Dean Smith worked with the 29-year-old at Villa and I would be cautious this is where the link has stemmed from. But, with talks already opened between Toon and the MLS side over Almiron both this month and over the summer, there could be some credence to the rumour.

Targett has fallen down the ranks at left-back after impressing during his initial loan spell, which saw him sign permanently from Aston Villa for a fee in the region of £15m.

Dan Burn then Lewis Hall both eclipsed the out of favour former Villan, who has had an unfortunate time with injury over the past few seasons, suffering hamstring and achilles issues.

High praise from Howe…but right time to go?

Targett has been a regular on the bench since November but has only featured once in the Premier League, against former club Aston Villa. He was however handed a rare start in the FA Cup against Bromley, and took his opportunity well – especially considering it was his first start since September 2023.

Playing behind Harvey Barnes, Targett assisted Lewis Miley’s rocket strike for the equalised and won the penalty scored by Anthony Gordon before departing at 70 minutes for Hall. A decent showing well-received by Eddie Howe.

Speaking after Targett’s performance on Sunday, Howe said: “The time he has spent injured has been hugely frustrating for him and for us because we’ve missed a very, very good player. Matt [Targett] is technically, for me, one of the best players in the squad.”

It’s hard to imagine Targett usurping Hall for the starting spot that has become nailed down by the 20-year-old, and with Targett 30 in September it’s unlikely he will contribute much to the squad in the coming years.

  1. If Miggy leaves, might as well put Sanusi on the bench! No need to put two goalkeepers or an overload of defenders on the bench – it’s silly unless we ever have a severe injury list again (which hopefully won’t happen)
