Fabrizio Romano: Newcastle set to receive surprise €15m bid for Lloyd Kelly

While Newcastle United aren’t actively looking to bring new players in at the minute, there are a number of rumours swirling around regarding who could potentially be leaving the club this January.

We always knew that before being able to sign anybody we were likely going to have to offload a couple of players to raise the funds, but identifying those we can afford to lose in what isn’t exactly a massive squad is proving to be difficult.

Kelly now linked to €15m move

One name who has been linked to a move away this month is defender Lloyd Kelly who, despite only signing for the club six months ago on a free transfer, was the subject of a bid from Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce last week.

Now, as reported by journalist Fabrizio Romano, Juventus have also entered the race for the former Bournemouth man who has started just four games for us in the Premier League this season.

It’s understood that the Italian giants are looking to make a bid of around €15m having seen Fenerbahce’s offer of €13m rejected last week.

Romano reports that Juventus had been hoping to take the versatile defender on loan for the rest of the season with an option to buy for the summer, but that proposal was rejected by Newcastle.

Two out could mean one in for Newcastle in January

Although Eddie Howe’s been pretty vocal about how the club are not pursuing any targets so far, that could all change should we be able to move a few on.

With Kelly linked with a move away and Miguel Almiron reportedly close to a return back to Atlanta United for around £8-10m, the funds raised from these two deals should put us in a decent enough position to start looking at some attacking replacements.

Having watched us win nine in a row before that disappointing display against Bournemouth, we look one top player short in our push for Champions League football and a trophy.

It wouldn’t be absolutely the end of the world to have Jacob Murphy as our only natural right-winger until the end of the season, but with a top four finish and cup win our ultimate target it would be a huge risk to not make a move.
