Newcastle agree fourth loan deal as highly-rated Mag heads to Bolton

It’s been a quiet month for incomings so far, with the majority of talk centering around outgoings.

Miguel Almiron is closing in on a move to Atlanta United and Lloyd Kelly is receiving interest from Fenerbahce and Juventus, but we’ve also seen loan moves for fringe man Isaac Hayden (Portsmouth) and a few of our top Under-21 talents.

Here’s the latest, as one of our first post-takeover recruits looks set for a spell in League One.

Bolton agree to sign young defender

According to reports on Monday morning, Newcastle defender Alex Murphy is on his way to Bolton Wanderers.

The Mail’s Craig Hope reveals that the 20-year-old looks set to join the League One side today, with the move expected to be a straight loan for the remainder of the season.

Murphy has shone at Under-21 level since arriving from Galway FC in the summer of 2022, leaving him eager for regular minutes at senior level.

The Ireland Under-21 international made two Premier League appearances last season, featuring in wins over Sheffield United and Chelsea, as well appearing in pr-season tours and training regularly with our first team.

Now, he’ll be part of a Bolton side pushing for promotion back to the Championship, with the Trotters currently three points away from the play-off spots.

Two other talents also loaned out

Murphy will become the third Academy talent to leave on loan this month, with Travis Hernes and Charlie McArthur also departing.

Last week, the club confirmed that Danish side Aalborg BK had agreed to sign Hernes on loan for the remainder of the season, subject to work permit approval.

The 19-year-old Norwegian joined the Toon from Shrewsbury in 2023 and made his first senior outing in our post-season tour of Australia last summer.

As for McArthur, the Scottish centre-back has signed for League Two side Carlisle for the second half of the season, joining former Mags Mike Williamson (manager) and Paul Dummett in Cumbria.

McArthur made his first start for Carlisle over the weekend, playing 90 minutes in a 1-0 defeat to Bradford City.

  1. Surely Kelly won’t be sold then. Seems like a good loan for Murphy going to team with a lot to play for still. Hope it works our better than Kuol to hearts did.
