‘The suspicion is’ – Newcastle unlikely to trigger clause but two in talks to sign

Talk of incomings will soon pick up as we head towards a huge summer for Paul Mitchell and Newcastle United.

However, with eight Mags currently out of contract at the end of the 2024/25 campaign, we have several deals to sort out between now and June.

Here is the latest, featuring updates on three Mags at risk of departing in a few months time if extensions aren’t agreed.

Wilson deal in doubt

A few days ago, The Chronicle reported that Newcastle were preparing to hand Callum Wilson a surprise extension – but it seems that may not be the case.

The Athletic have revealed that there is clause in the 32-year-old’s contract that allows us to extend by 12 months, but the current ‘suspicion’ behind scenes is that Newcastle will opt against an automatic renewal given his age (he turns 33 this month), injury record and the fact he’s a ‘significant earner’ at the club.

In his latest Q&A session for The Athletic this week, Waugh said: ‘Newcastle have an option available which allows them to unilaterally extend Callum Wilson’s contract by a year.

‘But given he is 32, has a poor injury record and is a significant earner, the suspicion is they will opt against doing so, though no decision has been taken and Newcastle have until the end of the season before they must make a call.

‘After scoring against Birmingham City in the FA Cup, Wilson once again showed what a threat he is when he is fit — and he is determined to prove he warrants a fresh deal.’

Waugh does stress that no decision has been made and it seems we have until late May to make a decision, but it’s clearly going to be a crucial few months for Wilson if he wishes to stay. Fail to stay fit and it seems he’ll be leaving.

Two Mags expected to sign

In contrast, it looks like two Newcastle United defenders are on course to sign new deals over the coming months.

Both Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth are also out of contract this summer, but The Athletic reveal that there is an ‘expectation’ both extend their stay after positive talks involving their representatives.

In the same Q&A piece, Waugh added: ‘As for Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth, discussions have been ongoing with their representatives for months and the expectation is that both will sign extensions, even if nothing has been agreed.’

  1. If he stays fit until the end of th season he’d get the extension? Make it a paid to play contract for his last year and I’ll bet he refuses.
