New transfer link emerges – Man City now eyeing another Newcastle player?

We may be a few months away from the summer transfer window, but the rumours and reports around potential incomings and outgoings at Newcastle United continue.

January was a frustrating yet productive month from a PSR position, with our finances heading into the summer boosted significantly following exits for Miguel Almiron (£10m) and Lloyd Kelly (£20m loan-to-buy).

A tough winter should help us in the long-term, with signings expected this summer as we look to bring in a right-winger, centre-back and another striker. However, part of the plan will also be to keep most of the current crop together.

Man City eyeing another Mag?

After many spent the first month of last summer’s transfer window speculating whether Man City would activate Bruno Guimaraes’ previous £100m release clause, it seems Pep Guardiola’s side have another Mag in mind.

According to The Telegraph, the current Premier League champions will target a right-back this summer and are keeping a close eye on Tino Livramento.

The England international – who will be hoping for a place in Thomas Tuchel’s Three Lions squad this week – has edged ahead of Kieran Trippier in Eddie Howe’s XI this season and progressed well following a £32m move from Southampton in 2023.

It’s thought City want a right-back following Kyle Walker’s January move to AC Milan and are also looking at Juventus’ Andrea Cambiaso.

Guardiola is also after a ‘No.8’ and has made his appreciation for Bruno Guimaraes known, although it’s not clear if City will reignite their interest in the Brazilian, who is clearly happy on Tyneside, under contract until 2028 and now the club’s captain.

Pep interest may silence doubters

Livramento has areas of his game to sharpen up, but the fact Pep Guardiola likes the look of him should reassure those doubting his displays this season.

He has shown limitations technically – it’s fair to say his passing and crossing is a level below Trippier’s at present – but he’s still only 22 with plenty of room for growth.

Few can beat him for pace, he’s a superb athlete, a very good one-vs-one defender, can play down either flank and has a great engine on him. If he can develop some of his possession play, there is no doubt he’s a top class full-back perfectly suited to the modern game.
