Isak injured, Tonali starts – Confirmed line-up as Newcastle take on Liverpool

The team sheets are in at Anfield, where Newcastle United take on top of the table Liverpool in tonight’s 8pm kick-off.

The two sides drew in our last meeting – a 3-3 draw at St James’ Park in December – but our record at Liverpool in recent years has been woeful, with our last league win coming back in 1994.

Here’s the side Eddie Howe has gone with against Arne Slot’s Reds, featuring TWO changes and a new injury worry.

Confirmed line-up

Newcastle XI: Pope – Livramento, Schar, Burn, Hall – Bruno, Tonali, Willock – Murphy, Wilson, Gordon.

Subs: Dubravka, Trippier, Ruddy, Longstaff, Osula, Miley, Targett, Krafth, Barnes

Howe has made TWO changes from Sunday’s 4-3 win over Nottingham Forest, seeing Alexander Isak (groin) drop out and Sandro Tonali return to the side after muscle tightness saw him benched.

Isak missed out with a ‘slight groin problem’, meaning Callum Wilson leads the line up against Virgil Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.

Tonali’s return sees Lewis Miley drop to the bench, suggesting Eddie Howe is guarding against playing the 18-year-old twice in four days after Sunday was his first league start of the season. As a result, Joe Willock keeps his place in midfield.

Joelinton and Sven Botman miss out once again, with neither spotted at Anfield. They are recovering from knee issues and were described as ‘close’ to comebacks by Howe on Tuesday.

Howay the lads!

  1. Personally with Isak out injured would have played Osula who has a bit more pace than Wilson who is past it imo.
This shows how fragile we are with PSR limitations our strength in depth at centre forward and the right wing positions, would have dropped Murphy, and squeezed the middle of the park or played Krafth in a back five.
