Newcastle plan marquee signing as Mitchell and Howe prepare for big summer – Report

As we approach the business end of the Premier League season, the first signs are starting to emerge of what Newcastle might just planned ahead of a crucial summer transfer window.

Though there is the small matter of 10 more Premier League games and the pursuit of Champions League football, the guarantee of playing at least UEFA Conference League football next season will have no doubt pushed the club hierarchy into early business mode.

With the prospect of the most exciting transfer window at Newcastle for quite some time, just what might there be to look forward to?

Mitchell eyeing one marquee signing

According to the Telegraph, Paul Mitchell’s tried-and-tested strategy of signing exciting young talent will be the main focus this summer – but the club are also making plans to recruit ‘at least one’ marquee signing.

As Luke Edwards states below, it’s thought this high-profile addition would ‘almost certainly’ have Premier League experience, suggesting we plan to shop abroad and domestically this summer.

”Mitchell’s plan is to focus on young talent, both at home and abroad. Although there will be at least one marquee name considered, almost certainly with Premier League experience.”
Scott Wilson of the Echo also corroborated recent reports that the club viewed Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen at the top of their transfer targets list, who certainly ticks all the boxes.

Who could it be?

In recent windows, the club has been able to coax the likes of Sandro Tonali, Alexander Isak and Sven Botman to believe in the Newcastle project.

And if the club are looking to make another marquee signing, perhaps of a similar calibre to the aforementioned talent – but who could it be if Premier League experience is key?

Former target Marc Guehi remains one to watch, while Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo and Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo would excite fans on Tyneside, though come at quite a cost!

Positive signs on Mitchell and Howe

Any questions or qualms over how the gaffer and sporting director would get along with such a crucial window ahead of them have been answered as well, and it’s looking like excellent news for all involved.

Despite reported issues last summer in Mitchell’s first window in charge, it sounds like he and Howe are now enjoying a positive relationship that bodes well for the coming months.

Edwards’ piece or The Telegraph’s piece states: “The working dynamic between Mitchell and Howe has had some friction in the past but both men have reassured the board, as well as chairman Al-Rumayyan, they can plan for the summer window with a collaborative approach.”

“The power dynamic is an interesting one. Howe is arguably stronger than ever. He led recruitment in the construction of the team that won the League Cup and will want to retain the final say on new arrivals.”
“Mitchell, though, has a proven track record in this area and is widely considered to be one of the leading figures in Europe. The bottom line is they have to work together. The club cannot lose sight of the fact that they need to give Howe the type of team and players he wants if they are going to build on their success.”
It comes as no co-incidence that the Premier League clubs that boast the best recent transfer activity, the likes of Man City, Brighton and Bournemouth, all have senior figures singing from the same hymn sheet: something which it looks like we’ll be seeing a lot of as Newcastle look to build on Sunday’s Carabao Cup success.

  1. Let’s hope it’s not Jack Grealish, the way he’s let his career go he seems like another Rashford to me, and at the age of 29 totally wrong profile.
