Bad news for Anthony Gordon – England release statement on Sunday

It’s been a mixed international break so far for our Newcastle United stars.

Dan Burn kept a clean sheet on his England debut, Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes both featured as Brazil won it late against Colombi and Sandro Tonali scored in a 2-1 defeat to Germany.

Martin Dubravka kept a clean sheet for Slovakia, Odysseas Vlachodimos was forced to watch from the bench as Greece lost 1-0 to Scotland and Alexander Isak played an hour in Sweden’s surprise 1-0 defeat to Luxembourg.

For Anthony Gordon, he’s already on his way back to Tyneside after a costly night at Wembley for the Newcastle winger.

Gordon forced to withdraw

Anthony Gordon replaced Marcus Rashford on Friday night for his first England appearance under new boss Thomas Tuchel, but left the pitch in distress after treatment.

The winger took a nasty whack to the hip and it’s been confirmed by England this morning that the 24-year-old has had to withdraw due to an injury sustained in that 2-0 win over Albania.

An England statement reads: ‘Anthony Gordon has withdrawn from Three Lions camp having sustained an injury during Friday night’s 2-0 win over Albania. The forward has returned to Newcastle United for further assessment.’

Speaking after the match, Tuchel said: “He looks injured. I thought it was his stomach but it’s his hip and it does not look good. It’s a bit worrying.”

Blow for Gordon – but when could he return?

A real shame for Gordon, who was in line to start tonight’s 7.45pm clash with Latvia, by all accounts.

He missed last Sunday’s cup final win at Wembley and is still out through suspension at club level, giving him that extra time to recover, Newcastle will hope.

Regardless of his injury, the third and final game he’ll sit out following a three-match ban is our home clash with Brentford a week on Wednesday, meaning he has until our trip to Leicester on Monday 7th April to recover.

Hopefully it’s just a bad dead leg and heavy knock that will settle down soon enough.
