Alan Pardew predicts signing Newcastle will target – “I think that’ll be where Eddie goes”

Former Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has given an alternative view on the type of player Eddie Howe will target in the summer transfer window.

The 63-year-old was in charge of the Magpies between 2010 and 2014 and oversaw a period of relative success on Tyneside, guiding us to a Europa League quarter-final in 2012/12 following a fifth-placed finish that was our highest since Sir Bobby Robson the campaign prior.

Several smart signings arrived during Pardew’s tenure in the North East, including Demba Ba, Yohan Cabaye, Moussa Sissoko and Papiss Demba Cisse. With much talk about who Newcastle will sign this summer to build from their Carabao Cup win, the former boss has given his thoughts.

Pardew discusses Newcastle’s transfer needs

Speaking on talkSPORT last week, Alan Pardew has been discussing what Newcastle United must do in the transfer market this summer, picking out an area of the team he believes Eddie Howe must address.

For all the talk of a right-sided centre-back, goalscoring right-winger, young goalkeeper or striker to replace Callum Wilson, the former Toon boss believes a “top-drawer creative force” is what we’ll go for.

He said: “To improve that Newcastle side, in my opinion, they need a creative force. A real top-drawer creative force. I think that’ll be where Eddie probably goes.

“When you’re going into Champions League and multiple competitions, it’s going to be a huge strain. They’re going to need three or four players but definitely a first-team creative force.”

More technicians needed?

Our identity of physical presence is hinged from a team full of strong athletes, but there could be an argument that we need more technical skill and quality.

Kieran Trippier was once a driving force in our attacks and key to our build-up play but, although Tino Livramento has been excellent in this season and proved his two-footedness with the cross that led to Alexander Isak’s goal at Wembley, we play a different type of football now.

A goalscoring, creative right-winger would kill two birds with one stone. Jacob Murphy, despite his best season in a black-and-white shirt, has been touted as one who will be improved on this summer.

  1. If we are interested and could pull it off , think Cunha from Wolves would be a cracking signing
