Summer signings at Newcastle – Another goalkeeper on the way?

After going three transfer windows in a row without a major first-team incoming at Newcastle United, the need for reinforcements hasn’t been this necessary since PIF first walked through the door.

A squad that’s ageing, light in too many areas and lacking in the quality to compete at the highest level week in, week out has made an active upcoming window vital.

In this series of pieces, I’ll look at the areas that need addressing as a priority ahead of the 2025/26 season – starting in goal:

Goalkeeper – Toon turning to Trafford?

Despite having FIVE senior options on our books, a young goalkeeper look set to sign this summer and it seems we’ve already identified our top target. This being James Trafford.

A long-term target, it seems as though after coming close to completing a deal last year, it will be finalised soon. Personal terms already agreed with a fee unlikely to be a stumbling block, according to Craig Hope at The Mail.

He’ll add much-needed youth to the department, a whole 11 years younger than current no.1, Nick Pope, who still seems to be suffering from a shoulder injury sustained last season and has obvious limitations on the ball.

Trafford has kept a mind-blowing 27 clean sheets in 39 Championship games – a league record –  this campaign for a stubborn Burnley side pushing for an immediate return to the Premier League.

He’s also highly rated by the goalkeeper coaches at England, and he saved two penalties against Sunderland in the dying minutes, so what’s not to love?

With Pope, I think now is the right time for him to move on, with Leeds United linked with a summer move should they earn promotion.

Martin Dubravka has been handed a new deal and appears to be be a  suitable candidate for the back-up role, also proving himself to be capable of stepping in to great effect when required should Trafford need a bedding in period.

Another option is Lille’s Lucas Chevalier. The 23-year-old has been the standout stopper in Ligue 1 this season and has been linked, although it appears we’ve got our sights firmly set on Trafford.

  1. To compete at the top season after season, you need a top top keeper and I don’t think Trafford is that.

He’s certainly not yet, but the general consensus seems to be that he will be in the not too distant future. Him or Chevalier would be a good shout for the next 10 years plus.
