This is incredible from Jacob Murphy – More proof Eddie Howe is working wonders?

Jacob Murphy is having the season of his life for Newcastle United and his incredible rise is only continuing.

There have been many players transformed under Eddie Howe and his coaching staff, but Murphy putting up the best numbers of his career and still showing signs of progression now at 30-years-old.

His numbers were put into context after he added to his tally against Leicester City on Monday night and he’s mixing it with some of the Premier League’s most elite players.

Murphy stat proof of incredible rise

Only Mo Salah and Alexander Isak have more goal contributions than Jacob Murphy since December after the winger scored a brace against Leicester on Monday Night Football.

It was initially flagged up by Sky Sports commentary team Seb Hutchinson and Alan Smith during our victory at the King Power Stadium, then this table came up during discussions after full-time…

His brace last night took his tally for the season to eight goals and 10 assists in all competitions, an underappreciated achievement for a player considered not good enough for the Premier League a few years back.

Reported right-winger targets Bryan Mbeumo and Anthony Elanga are also on the list, with 12 goal contributions to Murphy’s 14 over the last four months.

Former Mag Chris Wood also joins them on the same tally following his superb season at Forest.

Howe’s latest success story

Huge credit must go to Murphy, but it would be remiss not to mention he is the latest product of a coaching staff that has excelled in working with the talent that they have already got.

Murphy’s two goals on Monday were the product of sharp movement, with his positioning at the back-post for the first exactly where you would want your winger when the ball comes in from the opposing side.

The second was a far more rare situation as Fabian Schar pinged it off the bar from 55-yards. Leicester’s defence had already given up on it – even Murphy admitted “I’m not sure why I followed it in,” as he controlled the ball that had rifled back into play unopposed before slotting home.

Point being: doing the right thing came instinctively to a player whose decision making has been questioned in the past, so credit to the coaching staff, and for the work Murphy has put in on the training ground to get to this point.

Our squad is still lacking in depth and we have no natural back-up for on the right, but Murphy is consistently delivering numbers adding to the unselfishness and work rate that are already part of his game.

Just another great story from Darsley Park to follow the likes of Joelinton and Fabian Schar; two Mags who looked down and out before Howe arrived.

The squad he took over felt a million miles from where we are now, but plenty have come on this journey with us and just keep getting better!
