Newcastle scouting trip made public as another potential target emerges

Another name has been linked with a summer move to Newcastle Paul Mitchell and Steve Nickson’s global search for potential recruits continues.

The latest ‘target’ is the third new link to have cropped up this week, with reports across the continent crediting us with an interest in Bundesliga midfielder Merlin Röhl and Benfica striker Vangelis Pavlidis.

Plenty of paper talk can be expected over the coming months as we are expected to finally move on from a PSR woes over the last three windows with some much-needed investment into the first team squad.

Toon scout set for Turkey?

Newcastle are sending a scout to Turkey to check on Eyüpspor goalkeeper Berke Özer in his next fixture on Monday, according to Turkish media outlet Ajansspor.

The 24-year-old has kept nine clean sheets and conceded 30 in 28 Super Lig appearances this season, alerting ourselves and Aston Villa to the shot-stopper – who has apparently said he is keen on a move to Villa Park.

Negotiations have yet to take place between Unai Emery’s side and the Turkish keeper, who played three times for Fenerbahce in the 2021/22 Europa League.

A successful scouting mission next week may see us up our interest in Özer, although it remains to be seen if we really will look elsewhere after recent reports indicated we’re expecting to land Burnley’s James Trafford.

Young goalkeeper wanted

It seems clear that a younger option to eventually overtake the current guard between the sticks is one of Newcastle’s priorities for this summer.

Martin Dubravka nearly departed in January, while Nick Pope has had an array of injury problems and isn’t great with his feet. Odysseas Vlachodimos, Mark Gillespie, and John Ruddy don’t exactly complete a very youthful goalkeeping unit.

Talks of James Trafford making the switch have been longstanding and the Burnley goalkeeper seems the most likely candidate to move to Tyneside – 23-year-old Lille keeper Lucas Chevalier is another who has been linked.

Özer offers a much less proven talent who may not be ready to start instantly, but Mitchell has talked about widening the search for talent so this could be one to watch.
