Three 9/10s and two 8s – Newcastle player ratings from 4-1 win over Man Utd

Another huge win for Newcastle United as we battered Man Utd 4-1 thanks to a Harvey Barnes brace and a number of quality displays at St James’ Park.

Here are our marks out of 10 and comments from a thoroughly enjoyable victory on Tyneside:

Starting 11

Pope (7) – Didn’t have too many saves to make against a poor Man Utd side but his distribution was noticeably poor. One key stop to deny Zirkzee in the first half bumps him up his mark.

Trippier (7.5) – Defended well and always available to receive possession, linking up nicely down the right. Set pieces were a bit below his usual high standards.

Schar (7) – Continuing his resurgence in form with another solid performance. Engaged in a physical duel with Hojlund which he seemed to enjoy.

Burn (7.5) – Had a few opportunities to score but nothing typifies his confidence quite like his 50 yard cross field passes in the second half! No nonsense, steady on the ball and absolutely everything in the air.

Livramento (9) – Conceded a goal down his side but aside from that he was absolutely colossal. Driving run and cross led to the second goal and he caused Man Utd all sorts of problems down the left. Lost count of the number of interceptions and one on duels he won.

Guimaraes (8) – Showed great composure to tuck away the fourth and final goal. Very much enjoyed his “I’m the Bruno” celebration! Caught on the ball once or twice in the first half but was a creative spark, always looking to find Murphy and Trippier down our right.

Tonali (9) – Not sure we’ve ever had a player with an engine quite like his. Covered every blade of grass and opened the scoring with a well taken volley. Length of the field run in the 94th minute tells you everything about his desire!

Joelinton (7.5) – Got through the game without a yellow card! Got the assist for the final goal with a great interception. Often overshadowed by his midfield partners but can’t be understated how crucial he is to how we play.

Murphy (8) – Customary assist for Barnes in the second half, continuing his rich vein of form. Looked a lot better on the ball than he has in recent times, noticeably dribbling past a few defenders.

Barnes (9) – Possibly his finest performance in a black and white shirt. Bagged himself a brace and was a nightmare for the Manchester United defence. Has made himself undroppable with the presence of Anthony Gordon lurking on the bench.

Isak (7) – Sublime assist for the opening goal but otherwise wasn’t too much of a factor. Almost seems an anomaly that we scored four and Isak wasn’t on the scoresheet!

Subs

Wilson (NR) – Struggled to get into it.

Longstaff (NR) – A little sloppy.

Krafth (NR) – His usual solid, reliable self.

Gordon (NR) – Bags of energy but didn’t get on the ball much.

Miley (NR) – Quiet, although did come on when the game was done.
