Over the past few months, we’ve seen a few Eddie Howe favourites land new deals to extend their stays at St James’ Park.
Fabian Schar has penned a 12-month extension and back-up stopper Martin Dubravka is also under contract for another season, even if that move was made to protect the Slovakian’s value following interest from Saudi Arabia.
One man who is yet to sign is Callum Wilson; a proven goalscorer over the years ,when fit, but there have been signs over the 2024/25 season that he may now be a spent force.
But, how do the club view his future and what is going on behind the scenes as he enters the final few months of his current deal?
A sign Wilson is heading for exit?
According to Mark Douglas at The i, Newcastle United are yet to initiate any talks over a new deal for Callum Wilson.
The striker’s deal expires this summer, although the club do have an option to extend his contract by 12 months if they wish to keep the 33-year-old for another season or protect his value in a bid to recoup a small fee.
However, no talks have taken place and a ‘change of the guard’ is expected this summer, with Douglas believing that Wilson is now ‘heading towards the exit door.’
The Telegraph had suggested last week that the club could keep Wilson for one more season as our third choice striker and look to sign Liam Delap, seeing Will Osula head out on loan.
That may remain a possibility, but you wonder what he’d offer next season other than leadership behind the scenes, making him a costly character to keep around.
The right time to go
Wilson is currently a big-earner and would almost certainly have to take a pay-cut if there was any chance of him staying for one more year as a third-choice option.
However, even if reduced terms were agreed, he’s struggled to make any impact during a string of cameo appearances over 2025 and looks levels below the Wilson we knew and loved from a few seasons ago.
He’s no longer holding up ball, lacks that physical threat he once possessed and is barely creating a chance for himself, with no goals in 14 appearances (256 minutes) of league football this season.
Replacing him with a young, hungry Liam Delap could be a great move, although

Newcastle need to be ruthless this window to move to the next level, no time for sentiment with PSR the way it is. Need to cut costs like Wilson and others.
