Newcastle set £10m asking price as two clubs battle for summer signing – Report

On a day where Newcastle United transfer news is dominated by the £60m asking price of Bryan Mbeumo, a more reasonable fee has been attached to one of our own players.

Several of the old guard who have been on a journey with Newcastle that dates back to Mike Ashley still remain. Some, like Fabian Schar, Jacob Murphy and Joelinton have much improved and are regulars in the starting XI.

There are also those who have fallen down the pecking order and are struggling for minutes in our push to add to our historic trophy winning season by earning a spot in next season’s Champions League – and this £10m valued midfielder falls into the latter of those two categories.

Two clubs to battle for Longstaff signing?

Leeds United and Everton are set to battle it out for the signing of Sean Longstaff this summer, according to The Sun.

The 27-year-old is yet to start a league game in 2025, with the preferred midfield three of Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali impenetrable this season and is thought to be available for £10m this summer.

A reasonable fee for the Geordie midfielder who has plenty of Premier League experience and is entering the final 12 months of his current contract.

Currently sixth in the pecking order behind Eddie Howe’s preferred trio as well as Lewis Miley and Joe Willock, Longstaff will be desperate to find first team football during the peak years of his career.

Former Leeds midfielder’s view on Longstaff

Former Leeds United, Nottingham Forest and Southampton midfielder David Prutton believes Sean Longstaff would be a “solid addition” for the Whites.

Prutton, who played for Leeds between 2007 and 2010 and currently works as a presenter for Sky Sports, believes the side embroiled in a battle for the Championship title with Burnley that will go down to the final day believes Longstaff has the key components that Leeds need.

Prutton told Football League World: “Sean Longstaff would be a solid addition for Leeds given the experience he has got under his belt at the top level.

“The thing you instantly like about players like that is his work ethic, his ability to be part of a team and the understanding of the pressure that comes with playing for a big football team, because he knows exactly what Newcastle is. He will have no qualms or worries about replicating that for Leeds United.

“The price has to be right, the wages have to be right, they can’t blow part of a structure that has been carefully curated. But, there is no point going up to the Premier League and not giving yourself the tools to do that and Sean could be a decent addition.”

  1. Why do we give players away for ridiculously small fees when WE sell them?
I’m no Longstaff fan, far from it, but he has a wealth of current Premiership and Cup experience and still is a good age with a lot more years of playing time left.
When we see average, relatively unknown players at the bottom of the Premiership, and indeed the Championship, being quoted at anything between £20 -35K it doesn’t make sense.
We’ll never make money at this club as long as we keep offering clubs our players for insulting knockdown prices.

  2. He is in last 12 months of his contract.

    This reduces the fee.

What do you think he is worth? Remember that’s just a rumour above.

  3. Transfermarket usually undervalue and they have him at € 22 million .. so I don’t know where the £ 10 million comes from.. maybe a hack writing nonsense in the Sun?
