Newcastle officials travel to watch Getafe star with €25m release clause – Report

As reported earlier today, it seems Newcastle could also be on the lookout for another midfielder this summer.

It must be lower down the club’s priority list as things stand, with a right winger, centre-back, striker and goalkeeper seeming high on the agenda, but greater strength in depth is needed,

Sean Longstaff has been tipped to depart as he nears the final year of his contract, while Crystal Palace have been linked with Joe Willock following a tricky year on Tyneside for the former Arsenal man.

With all of that in mind, it’s interesting to see a certain La Liga talent mentioned as a potential Newcastle target via the Spanish media today.

Getafe stat watched?

According to reports in Spain, Newcastle United have been taking a close look at Getafe’s Chrisantus Uche.

An exclusive from Football Espana claims that Toon scouts have been in Spain to watch the 22-year-old, who has attracted interest from a number of Premier League sides along with Altetico Madrid.

They report that Newcastle officials were in the stands to see Uche over the final months of the 2024/25 season, while talent spotters from Aston Villa, Bournemouth and Brentford have also checked out the Nigerian.

Uche’s versatility may be something that appeals to Newcastle and Eddie Howe, as the 6ft 3′ talent has operated as a midfielder, winger and striker over the past few seasons.

It’s not clear which position he will end up settling on, but with a €25m (£21m) release clause, admirable versatility and four goals and six assists across his first full season in the Spanish top flight, you can see why the club are watching him.

Depth must improve

Newcastle’s best 11 is already of a high standard, filled with top quality players such as Sven Botman, two top England full-backs, a superb midfield three and one of Europe’s most feared strikers in Alexander Isak.

However, our depth must improve to ensure we are not caught out by the strains of Champions League football, especially if we also plan to compete in the league and across both domestic cup competitions in 2025/26.

Joelinton, for example, has missed 36% of our Premier League games over the past two seasons, and his current back up option is an out of sorts and recently unreliable Joe Willock.

A similar situation exists up top, with Callum Wilson the first in line should Isak break down, while there is no strength in depth behind Fabian Schar in that right-sided centre-back role.

Signing a quality right winger and ball-playing Nick Pope upgrade may be on the cards, but filling certain gaps in the squad will also be key, making players of Uche’s versatility particularly appealing.

  1. So only the scouts/officials travelled there earlier in the season. As did hundreds of scouts from other clubs. What you’re saying is – nothing’s happened.

  2. 6 foot 3 inches and built like a house, seems to fit the profile that Howe likes.
I’ve said it before we will be lucky to get any of the headline players we have been linked with.
