Newcastle United have confirmed their first summer signing this morning.
In a deal that’s been on the cards for some time, the club have announced that 18-year-old winger Antonio Cordero will sign on July 1st when his contract at Malaga officially expires.
The Spanish Under-19 international, known as ‘Antoñito’, will arrive on a free transfer and may act as a parting gift from departing sporting director Paul Mitchell, who has overseen our pursuit of the LaLiga2 talent.
In a club statement, Newcastle state that Cordero is ‘expected to head out on loan’ this summer, with Ajax previously linked as a potential destination.
Here’s what Mitchell and the man himself have had to say following today’s announcement:
Mitchell “delighted” to land Spaniard
Paul Mitchell may be leaving, but it’s believed our sporting director has played a key role in bringing him to Tyneside.
The 43-year-old admits that Newcastle have signed a player with “lots of potential” and confirms a loan move will be lined up after beating top sides across Europe to his signature:
Discussing his arrival, Mitchell said: “Antonio is an exciting talent. We’re delighted to bring him to Newcastle United amidst interest in Spain and across Europe.
“He has lots of potential, and the next phase of his development will be for the club to select a loan move that will challenge him and build on his experiences.”
Cordero on “big step”
Speaking to the club’s official website, Cordero revealed his delight at sealing a move, feeling he’s come to “one of the best places in the world” to reach his goals after an impressive breakout season in LaLiga2 with Malaga.
“It’s truly an honour to be here, truly a pleasure,” Cordero said. “I am a person who likes to aspire high. Why not come to one of the best places in the world to do it.
“It’s a big step, and that’s one of the reasons I’m here. I’m happy to do it and have a great desire to get going already.”
