Whilst the primary focus of the summer transfer window being on first team acquisitions, there looks to be no signs of things slowing down in terms of youth scouting.
Even with Paul Mitchell’s pending departure, the club looks to be staying in line with his vision of recruiting the very best hidden gems to eventually integrate into the first team or flip for significant profit.
Antonio Cordero from Malaga will be the biggest name on paper this summer, but two Scottish youngsters could be following him through the door.
Newcastle to raid Rangers once again
Rangers are preparing for an exodus of youth talent over the border and into the Premier League.
Newcastle are set to follow up a move for Oliver Goodbrand – who is due on Tyneside for a medical – by moving for another of the Glasgow club’s top prospects.
16-year-old winger Alfie Hutchison is also attracting serious interest from Newcastle and is expected to join Goodbrand on Tyneside as the club’s Academy prepare to land two top Scottish talents.
Hutchinson marked his Rangers Glasgow Cup debut with two goals against Queen’s Park earlier this year and could be the latest talent to join our ranks.
Who are Oliver Goodbrand and Alfie Hutchinson?
Back in April, it was reported that Goodbrand was going to reject a professional contract with Rangers, now managed by Russell Martin, in favour of switch to the Toon academy set-up.
Goodrand is a left-footed defender who has also played on the wing. He broke into the Rangers B team at the age of 15 and has captained Scotland at youth level.
Hutchison is perhaps even more highly-regarded, having signed from Hearts’ academy last summer and making a big impression ever since.
At the time, Hearts reporter Joel Sked wrote that whoever signed Hutchison would have a serious player on their hands. And by all accounts, it looks like we’re looking to complete quite a signing.
“The teenager has impressed playing for Scotland, scoring against Italy and Portugal, and will likely continue to be monitored by clubs down south.”
These repeated comments about youth players are all very well, but completely meaningless as nobody has heard of them and it is very unlikely they will come good in the long run: not at all impossible, but well over-hyped as they stand at the minute. Give us a break.
