Newcastle targeting Valencia star? – Spanish media claim Toon are in the mix for signing

The summer transfer window may be finally starting to heat up for Newcastle United.

We launched a £45m bid for Anthony Elanga on Tuesday, which has been rejected, but that first major move has also come alongside ongoing talks to land Joao Pedro from Brighton and Burnley’s James Trafford.

Our pursuit of a centre-back, however, is quite up in the air, as we’ve seen links to Marc Guehi go quiet and Atalanta’s Giorgio Scalvini emerges as a potential option, yet one that the Serie A side are determined to keep.

Several reports have claimed that certain overseas targets are yet to come out in the public domain and, with that in mind, a new name has been linked today via the Spanish press.

Toon interested in Spanish talent?

According to El Desmarque, Newcastle are showing interest in 23-year-old Valencia centre-back César Tárrega.

They report that Newcastle have been tracking his progress, where he has not only shone in La Liga, playing all 38 games for Valencia last season, but also stood out in Spain’s run to the semi-finals of the Under-21 European Championships this month.

The 6ft 4′ defender also has interest from Serie A side Bologna, however, and has been identified by the Italians as a potential replacement for Jhon Lucumí.

Up to this point, the Spaniard has publicly declared his interest in extending his contract at Valencia and agree to improved terms, but El Desmarque are unsure if emerging interest from England and Italy could change things.
