‘Deal done soon’ – Newcastle close in on first major signing as Fabrizio Romano drops hint

Things are finally starting to heat up on the Toon transfer front, it would seem.

After a Luke Edwards exclusive revealed this lunchtime that we’ve launched a £125m triple bid for Joao Pedro, Anthony Elanga and James Trafford, another promising update has landed from Fabrizio Romano.

The transfer specialist revealed on Monday that Newcastle are in formal negotiations with Burnley over a deal for Trafford, also hinting that discussions with an early-July transfer in mind.

Following up on that story today, Romano has gone a step further, saying there is now plans in place to ‘accelerate’ the move and get a ‘deal done soon.’

Hopefully this is a sign that talks are progressing and we are close to agreeing a fee with Burnley, who may be willing to compromise on their initial £40m demands now German stopper Max Weiss has signed at Turf Moor this week.

This comes after Edwards’ piece for The Telegraph revealed that we have made an opening offer worth £25m plus add-ons for the England talent.

Trafford has been a leading target for 12 months now and appears to be the young, ball-playing option Eddie Howe wants to become Nick Pope’s long-term successor.

The player himself appears to be keen on the move, recently revealing on Ben Foster’s Fozcast that he came close to signing for Newcastle last summer in a transfer he was desperate to secure at the time.

  1. A load of codswallop.
If we are to believe it Burnley want £40m for Trafford, Forest want more than £45m for Elanga £45m and Pedro Brighton want minimum of £60m?
My mathematics makes that £145m that’s if they play ball!
