Anthony Elanga will soon become a Newcastle United player, with an official announcement (eventually) set to arrive imminently, but the club are also busy working on other deals after securing the £55m winger.
Despite suggestions from Sky Sports’ Keith Downie that a striker will be prioritised next, a new report claims we are moving closer to signing James Trafford.
According to Lee Ryder at The Chronicle, negotiations over Trafford’s move to Newcastle United have intensified over the past 24 hours.
Ryder reports that Newcastle and Burnley are working to reach an agreement, stating that the two sides are “closer” to agreeing a deal after positive discussions this week.
It’s understood that Burnley had been holding out for a total package closer to £40m for the highly-rated goalkeeper, with Newcastle’s previous offer falling short at the £27m mark.
However, despite the £13m gap, it’s believed Burnley may accept a deal that includes a lower initial fee, providing add-ons take the overall package closer to their asking price.
With the 22-year-old keen to sign and both parties locked in talks, it does feel like all parties know a deal is there to be done.
Burnley know 20% of the final fee will go straight to former club Man City due to the clause inserted two years ago. They have every right to push for more, especially after promotion and his superb season in the Championship, but it feels like a compromise may be edging closer, especially if we upped our offer slightly and included suitable add-ons.

At £40 million walk away .. pope and dubravka are fine and both had good seasons and are experienced .. Trafford was in the championship last year and it’s noticeable nobody else is in for him ..Transfermarket have him at € 22 million euros.. that’s about £18 million … marmadasvilli new Liverpool’s keeper is recognised as top draw in world football was £35 million ..

Klopp the complainer, how little Liverpool had to spend!
One of the big six always crying about how tough life is at the top, yet they could pay £35 million for this keeper and loan him straight back out and keep him up their sleeve for later.

Trafford for £40M – crazy money for a goalkeeper, £30M tops. If he comes then obviously Pope or Dubravka have to go

I don’t get the “urgent need” for Trafford.
We have 2 of the best keepers in the Prem in Pope and Dubravka.
Hold onto them both, work on the striker.

Its correct there is no urgent need for a keeper for gods sake we need a central defender thets the priority

£40 is way too much for Trafford ,no need for him to be honest, much prefer us to put that money towards a striker

You got a great keeper off us in Popey, and you’ll be getting an even better one in Trafford, who if he stays fit should be your keeper for 15 years. £40m would be a snip, but if you continue to play hardball, we’ll just get it in add-ons over the next few seasons. Either way!!
