Giorgio Scalvini’s response to Newcastle interest as Atalanta price tag goes public

The noise around Newcastle United’s reported interest in Giorgi Scalvini has been growing and growing over the past few weeks.

Initially reported by Italian journalist Matteo Moretto, we’ve since seen Fabrizio Romano join North East reporters Luke Edwards and Craig Hope in confirming our admiration of the Atalanta centre-back.

A Friday afternoon update has now landed from The iPaper’s Mark Douglas, who reveals that Man Utd, Spurs and Juventus are also thought to be in the running for the 21-year-old.

However, there has been some encouragement from the player himself, with The i told that Scalvini is “flattered” by Newcastle’s long-term interest and “intrigued” by the opportunity of playing in the Premier League.

He won’t come cheap, mind, as Atalanta are demanding a fee of at least £50m to land the Italian international, who will of course know Sandro Tonali well following their time together in the national side, at senior and youth level.

While Newcastle have predominantly turned attentions to signing a striker after wrapping up a £52m deal for Anthony Elanga, Douglas reveals that Newcastle are also pursuing options at centre-back, with a quality, young right-sided option wanted to compete with and eventually replace Fabian Schar.

The i state that Newcastle have carried out ‘preliminary work’ on a potential deal, although further player trading may be needed to spend in the region of £50m on Scalvini, especially when a striker is also wanted alongside top goalkeeper target James Trafford; likely to cost in excess of £30m.

  1. Spend the money on Trafford and Scalvini if we are convinced by his fitness. Forget about a big money striker, Get Mitrovic back on loan for a year from Al-hilal
