Newcastle move for Wissa as Liverpool close in on €80m deal – Major twist on Thursday

The twists and turns continue when it comes to Newcastle’s ongoing pursuit of a striker this summer.

In a double update from The Athletic’s David Ornstein, there is good and bad news to share regarding Hugo Ekitike, Alexander Isak and the new striker target we appear to have turned to.

Newcastle appear to have missed out on Ekitike to Liverpool, with Ornstein revealing that a deal worth in excess of €80m is now being negotiated between the Reds and Frankfurt, with the player ready to sign.

However, with that comes great news on Alexander Isak – another Premier League side is out of the running for our star man – and it’s seen us move on to another option.

Ornstein reports that Newcastle are exploring a deal to bring Yoanne Wissa to St James’ Park, with the Brentford striker wanted after the club cooled their interest in Ekitike.

Toon chiefs are expected to contact Brentford soon over a deal, knowing his availability and price could depend on Man Utd’s ongoing issues in agreeing a deal for Bees teammate Bryan Mbeumo.

Craig Hope was the first to reveal Newcastle’s interest in Wissa earlier this month, with the 28-year-old DR Congo international and intriguing option given his versatility and superb record of 31 league goals over the last two seasons.
