£65m + £5m bid could derail Newcastle’s push to sign 20-goal alternative to Ekitike

It’s been a pretty exhausting week of transfer twists and turns on Tyneside, especially in our chase for a top quality Callum Wilson replacement.

We got a little more clarity on Thursday, as Liverpool gave up on Alexander Isak by moving for Toon-linked Hugo Ekitike, who is now set to join the Reds in a deal worth over £70m.

News of Newcastle pulling out of Ekitike talks was quickly followed by us turning to Yoane Wissa, with David Ornstein and BBC Sport revealing that we’re now pushing to land the Brentford striker ahead of Spurs and Nottingham Forest.

However, there has been another twist that could impact our pursuit of the DR Congo international, especially as Brentford have made it clear they do not plan to sell BOTH of their star attackers; Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo.

In news that doesn’t feel like a coincidence, Ornstein, Sky Sports and Fabrizio Romano all report that Man Utd have reacted to Newcastle’s interest in Wissa by lodging an improved bid of £65m + £5m in add-ons for Mbeumo.

The Red Devils have been trying and failing to agree a fee for the Cameroonian for weeks, but will know that it’s a deal in danger of falling apart if Newcastle swoop in and sign Wissa.

So, with a £70m package now on the table for Mbeumo and Brentford’s stance remaining that only one of their two top scorers will be allowed to leave this summer, our battle to sign Wissa could become far tougher if Man Utd have that bid accepted.

It’s not out of the realms of possibility that Brentford cash in on both. Stranger things have happened, but they’d demand huge money for Wissa should Mbeumo go first, which I doubt we’d be willing to pay considering he’s a 28-year-old turning 29 in September and heading to AFCON across December and January.

So, if we really do want Wissa after missing out on Delap, Pedro and Ekitike over the past month, I’d suggest we need to move quickly!

  1. You can’t move quickly if the club or players don’t want to sell or come .. mbuemo has been in negotiations for weeks it’s ridiculous to start pumping out the derail , gazumped , not acting quickly narratives from the legacy media hacks ., ..it’s been reported that wissa wants to go to spurs .. the mbuemo deal is far down the line… Newcastle are trying to get players in a difficult market
