“100% on it” – Howe issues transfer update & explains Newcastle’s new signings battle

Eddie Howe has been talking about transfers and the lack of them after Newcastle’s 4-0 defeat at Celtic Park on Saturday.

It’s been a tough summer so far, with failed attempts to land Liam Delap, Bryan Mbeumo, Joao Pedro and Hugo Ekitike causing huge frustration over the past six weeks.

Anthony Elanga has signed in an exciting £55m move from Nottingham last Friday, but that news has been followed by a blow in our pursuit of James Trafford and fears around Alexander Isak’s future.

But what did Howe say on potential incomings on Saturday night? Here is what we found following his chat with the media:

“We’ve had a frustrating time in missing out on targets, I’ll be open on that. But we’re confident we can get in some players who can strengthen the team. We wanted more (incomings).’

“We’re seeking players that are good enough, that are desperate to come, and that can make the difference, but they’re in short supply for us.

“I’d say I’m hopeful rather than confident because we’re not in control of the market or agents, players and other clubs.

“I can assure everybody we are a 100% on it and trying to do things quickly.”

The second line is telling and part of our battle. They not only need to be quality players who improve us, but they have to be keen to arrive and passionate about the project, much like Bruno and others have been post-takeover.

His preference to say ‘hopeful’ over ‘confident’ is also classic Howe. Just like on Isak’s future and refusing to give ‘100%’ assurances he’ll stay, he will be wary of his wording when there are so many tough factors at play to seal a signing.

Fingers crossed signings arrive soon. After a tough window so far, several setbacks and today’s 4-0 loss, we need it!

  1. Trying to get players on the cheap won’t help our cause, we lose out because we have a budget, other clubs come in and pay the money.

The PIF need to start prioritising us over golf and virtually every other club in the league and we might actually start getting somewhere.

We are still a PIF priority, but one of several. I’d love it if we were their only priority but it won’t happen, they are so huge. They have been amazing for us. Your right, we are struggling because we are trying to buy top players against cartel clubs in a totally skewed market with ridiculous unfair rules designed to ensure we can’t compete. Every £ counts for us, so these people saying we aren’t trying, don’t move quickly or should just pay whatever the asking price is just don’t understand the situation. Howe has said they are doing everything and 100% on it…do the angry mob think he’s lying?
