Several players on the fringes of Newcastle United’s squad are at risk of being moved on this summer, according to a new report.
Sean Longstaff’s £15m move to Leeds United is now complete, and the midfielder is not the only one who may be moving on over the next few weeks, even if it’s incomings that we really need ahead of the new season.
The Athletic have named seven who face uncertain futures on Tyneside, including some forgotten men.
Joe Willock
Joe Willock has struggled to regain his form from his initial loan spell in 2020/21, and was far from his best in 2024/25. The 25-year-old is “not actively for sale,” but a sizeable bid would have to be considered.
With Longstaff already departing, Newcastle will need to look for midfield reinforcements should both leave with Lewis Miley the only other out-and-out midfielder outside of the starting three.
Kieran Trippier
One of the first statement signings of the PIF era, Kieran Trippier put his faith in the project when he switched from Atletico Madrid in January 2022. The 34-year-old is now into the final 12 months of his deal and is “considering his options”.
Trippier has been linked with moves to Galatasaray and Bayern Munich already during his time with Newcastle. The veteran proved his worth in the latter half of the most recent campaign but, as one of our highest earners, an exit would see our wage bill reduced.
Martin Dubravka
With Nick Pope suffering an injury in December, Martin Dubravka became vital for Newcastle between the sticks when Saudi Arabian interest emerged in January – the Slovakian signing a contract extension as a result.
If James Trafford arrives though the same opportunity is unlikely to come the way of the 36-year-old again. But with Man City moving in for Trafford, it’s unclear what happens to Dubravka who may not want to settle for a back-up role again.
Odysseas Vlachodimos
The Odysseas Vlachodimos situation is more complex. The Greek international is available, however given Newcastle signed the 31-year-old for £20m just last summer a “significantly lower fee” would impact our PSR position.
Thus, Vlachodimos is more than likely going to be heading out on loan this summer with a permanent exit difficult to achieve.
Matt Targett
Matt Targett has struggled for minutes this season, his only starts in 2025 coming in FA Cup wins over Bromley and Birmingham. The 29-year-old is available for transfer this summer and takes home a very decent wage considering his lack of game time.
Like many, he struggled at Celtic on Saturday and was done for pace on more than one occasion.
Joe White
Newcastle would likely consider offers for Joe White, who has been with the club since he was 13-years-old. A close friend of James Trafford having grown up with the goalkeeper in Cumbria, White impressed on loan at MK Dons last season but, now 22, may not see a future in black-and-white.
Sadly, he did little to impress at Celtic on Saturday and it feels like he needs a move to kick-start his career at senior level.
Harrison Ashby
Harrison Ashby signed for just shy of £3m in January 2023 with much promise but has yet to kick into gear. The right-back, who grabbed an assist against Sunderland on the final day of last season’s Championship, may move again this summer.
He didn’t get a kick at Celtic last weekend, he’s older than first team star Tino Livramento and hasn’t quite lived up to the early promise when he arrived two and a half years ago.

We can’t possibly consider Tripps going! Our paper-thin squad needs him and plenty other class players: there are some we can let go because they lack that class, but Tripps ain’t one of them.

Not the richest club in the world, richest owners who have major other businesses in their portfolio. We are tied to the PL processes like all other clubs, all these so called pundits and experts plus agents just try to upset our club and fans. We have to keeping moving on forward. Hwtl

Worse still they have other agenda’s such as making the Saudi pro league competitive ahead of the world cup buying up the cartels cast off players for silly money and yet because we’re owned by PIF we can’t do the same because it’s ATP. Casemiro for £80m anyone?
the cartel having been financially doped before PSR shut the door are getting doubly helped by ATP as well. Yet selling hotels and women’s teams back to yourself is perfectly fine.
If the premier league was a truly level playing field it would be a different matter entirely. If the club were allowed to use the owners resources we would see some different outcomes in these transfer negotiations.
