Callum Wilson is fast becoming one of the most in-demand free agents in the country right now.
Having seen his contract with Newcastle United expire at the beginning of July, few would have expected Wilson to receive several Premier League offers after failing to score a league goal over the entire 2024/25 season.
However, the 33-year-old not only has an offer from newly-promoted sides Burnley, but is now in discussions over a surprise switch to the capital as a London club enters talks.
Wilson heading to London?
According to The Sun’s Jack Rosser, Callum Wilson could potentially be on his way to Graham Potter’s West Ham on a free transfer this summer.
Writing on X, Rosser claims that the Hammers are in talks with the former Bournemouth star following his decision to leave Newcastle earlier this month.
It’s believed that West Ham are long-term admirers of Wilson, but any contract at the London Stadium is likely to be ‘weighted towards appearances and goals.’
Wilson was notoriously prolific against the Irons during his time on Tyneside, with West Ham the club he has scored the most goals against throughout his career.
But with Wilson’s age, recent fitness concerns and recent unreliability, it’s perhaps no surprise that the Hammers are leaning towards a ‘pay-as-you-play’ style deal, with similar terms said to be offered by Newcastle.
West Ham, Burnley, or Saudi Arabia for Wilson?
Wilson has previously revealed that playing for the England National Team remains a top priority for him, with the highly-driven striker determined to remain at the highest level.
By that logic, opting for a move that keeps him in the Premier League and in the limelight would perhaps be the best for his career.
One would have to wonder if Wilson would actually get many minutes for West Ham, however. We saw last season that even Evan Ferguson barely got a chance to shine, and now he’s set to be loaned out to Roma from Brighton instead.
Saudi Arabia presents one last final payday before retirement for the former Bournemouth ace. Compatriot Ivan Toney has still been able to make Thomas Tuchel’s England squad whilst at Al-Ahli, which would ease any concerns Wilson may have about making the move to the Middle East.
However, at 33, it does feel like any hope of an England call may be beyond Wilson at this stage of his career, whether he remains in England or ends up abroad.
