Superb from Yoane Wissa – Proof £30m Brentford star could be ideal Newcastle buy

Newcastle’s search for a new striker has led the club to Congolese international Yoane Wissa.

After early setbacks saw us try and fail to land Liam Delap, Joao Pedro and Hugo Ekitike, our approach appears to have changed slightly, as we turn to the experienced Brentford striker over instead of an exciting young attacker in their early 20s.

A shift in our strategy that will hopefully pay off, with Sky Sports reporting that a £30m bid is imminent and personal terms not a problem as we look to land the 28-year-old Bees star.

With Wissa clearly the new priority, it’s a good time to share some incredibly impressive stats that highlights just how good he’s been over the past 12 months.

Yoane Wissa’s non-penalty goal return (19) was only beaten by Mo Salah (20) in the Premier League last season, made even more impressive when he played 451 minutes less than Liverpool’s Egyptian king.

Not only that, the 2024/25 stats show that he matched Erling Haaland and Alexander Isak for non-penalty goals, also outscoring Man Utd’s new £130m duo Matheus Cunha (15) and Bryan Mbeumo (15) in this department.

Considering Newcastle need a reliable striker to ensure we’re far less reliant on Alexander Isak in what is likely to be a 50-60 game campaign over 2025/26, he has the tools to be a hugely effective Callum Wilson replacement.

Previous targets Pedro, Ekitike and Delap all have higher ceilings, but if Wissa comes in at £30m to bolster our depth up top, it’s a very decent ‘plan D’ in the circumstances.

The fee, if agreed, would also be far more palatable than the £40-50m previously suggested, especially when re-sale value could be limited given he turns 29 in September.

But, all in all, looking at his versatility, goal record over the last two years (32 goals), reasonable wage demands and readiness to join as a squad member in a Champions League squad, Wissa’s arrival at £30m could be a smart piece of business after several striker setbacks.

After a number of false dawns and frustrations over the past seven weeks, let’s hope this one actually get done without a ‘big six’ side hijacking our bid!

  2. At 29, Wissa’s got another three good years minimum to score goals for us.I really hope we’re not going to quibble over a few millions when it comes to paying for this talented player.

  3. I should also add that over the past 4-5 years, the player has featured in almost every match of the season.
With his stats like that, he’s not a backup for Wilson—he’s a starting XI player

  4. If Newcastle had gone for wissa only and none of Pedro, etikite ( £79 million fee and £250k a week for one good season after the Psg flop!! ) or mbuemo… most would be thrilled at having a very successful prem league striker ..not potential but actual consistent scorer of goals ., let’s hope we sign him up

  6. Keep your frustrations in check. No one at the club wants anything but the best for the club.
We’re building in the right way.
Said from the start Wissa is a TOP target. Wish we’d swooped before Mbeumo.
