Newcastle United have announced another outgoing, only this time it’s a ‘project’ player heading out for some valuable minutes at senior level.
Joe White departed for Leyton Orient in a season-long loan move earlier this week, and we’ve now had confirmation on Antonio Cordero’s loan destination.
As reported via the Spanish media, Newcastle have confirmed that the 18-year-old winger has joined Belgian side KVC Westerlo for the 2025/26 season.
The Spanish youth international arrived on a free transfer from Malaga last month, with the highly-rated winger signed in a rare coup for our former sporting director Paul Mitchell.
A switch to Dutch giants Ajax had been touted and there was loan interest from Spanish sides, but Cordero will now spend the upcoming season in the Belgian Pro League.
Hopefully the left winger gets plenty of game time at Westerlo after featuring regularly in La Liga 2 last season for Malaga, with first team minutes essential after some testing loan moves for other ‘project’ players like Garang Kuol and Miodrag Pivas; two talents who found games hard to come by in the Netherlands recently.
Official Newcastle United statement – Friday 1st August
‘Newcastle United winger Antonio Cordero has joined Belgian Pro League side KVC Westerlo for the 2025/26 season.
‘The 18-year-old joined the Magpies in July upon the expiry of his contract at Malaga, after making 60 senior appearances for the Spanish team including 37 last season in La Liga 2.
‘Cordero represented his country this summer at the UEFA Under-19 Championships and played a key role as Spain reached the final before ultimately finishing as runners-up to the Netherlands, starting four of their five matches in the tournament.
‘The teenager now moves to KVC Westerlo who finished 9th in the Belgian top-flight in the 2024/25 season and everybody at Newcastle United wishes Antonio well for the upcoming campaign.’
