Newcastle’s goalkeeper situation heading into the new season looks to be far more complicated than it needs to be.
Nick Pope enters the season as the number one choice still, but new arrival Aaron Ramsdale is now expected to contest with Pope for the coveted starter spot.
Also on the books are John Ruddy, Mark Gillespie, Martin Dubravka and the often-forgotten Odysseas Vlachodimos, with the latter pair expected to depart over the coming weeks.
Two goalkeepers set for exit?
According to The Mail’s Craig Hope, Odysseas Vlachodimos is set to leave this summer and is receiving interest from Sevilla over a potential loan move.
This comes following earlier reports that Villarreal were also interested in signing the Greek No.1 on loan, who has already rejected a move to Mexican club Pumas, prioritising a move within Europe for his career and family.
Because of the £20m paid for him from Nottingham Forest in that PSR ‘swap’ deal involving Elliot Anderson last June, selling Vlachodimos permanently so soon after buying him would have a negative impact on the books. Although it’s thought ‘all options’ remain open.
As for Martin Dubravka, Hope reports that Burnley remain keen to sign the 36-year-old, with talks progressing well between Newcastle and the Clarets, as Sky Sports reported.
Dubravka was due on the tour of Asia, but had to get treatment on a shoulder issue. A few weeks on, it appears that the former Sparta Prague star could be joining Scott Parker at Turf Moor.
We’ve already said goodbye to the likes of Sean Longstaff, Callum Wilson, Jamal Lewis and Isaac Hayden, with Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly also leaving earlier this year.

John Ruddy is not on the books. He left at the end of his contract and is now a free agent.

I believe he signed an extension for another year no?

He isn’t. He signed a new deal and played against Arsenal two weekends ago. Has been part of the squad in Asia.
