Newcastle turn to Samu Aghehowa – David Ornstein

Newcastle’s United hunt for two new strikers continues.

A number of Premier League links have emerged this week, with £95m duo Nicolas Jackson and Yoane Wissa two of several options.

However, an exciting new link from perhaps the most reliable reporter in the business has emerged on Friday lunchtime from David Ornstein.

Writing for The Athletic, Ornstein reveals that Newcastle are now considering a formal move for Porto powerhouse Samu Aghehowa.

Newcastle are yet to make an official approach for the 21-year-old and there is ‘no guarantee’ that he will arrive at St James’ Park in a line to manage expectations.

However, he is well liked on Tyneside and part of a small shortlist of strikers thought to be under serious consideration now a £70m bid for Benjamin Sesko ended with the striker heading to Man Utd instead.

Samu is a 6ft 4″ Spanish international who produced an outstanding debut season for Porto over the 2024/25 campaign, bagging 27 goals in 45 appearances.

Ornstein also reports that Wolves’Jorgen Strand Larsen is also an option, alongside Wissa, but the Midlands club consider their star striker ‘not for sale.’

  1. I said last week and again last night he’s the one to go for. In the circs of this difficult summer I’ll waive my commission fee NUFC 😁😁
Just turned 21, big, powerful, quick, two footed and a good finisher. Howe would turn him into a superstar. Full Spanish international too. Every bit as much promise as sesko \ ekitike imo. Portuguese teams are tough negotiators, but worth pushing the boat out for him as we then get the big ££ for the pure rat anyway

  2. Would love him here but can see it being a difficult deal to pull off, he’s not long signed for them and has a 100m release clause and they will want big bucks for him as Atletico have a 50% sell on clause.

  3. If we can get Wissa alongside him then defo go for him – but I think we need some experience up there too.

Getting Wissa would take some of the load off Samu and Wissa PL ready to give the lad time to bed in.

  4. Last year, when Chelsea fans were laughing at him and worried he might join them, I wrote that he was a good player with unique qualities at a great price. But back then, he cost £35 million (the transfer fell through because of Chelsea). Now, does it make sense to buy him for twice as much?
