Newcastle announce 11th senior exit of 2025 as Matt Target leaves – Club statement

Newcastle United have announced another summer exit, as Matt Targett has today completed a move away from St James’ Park.

The left-back has sealed a switch to Championship side Middlesbrough, keeping him in the North East as he looks to get his career back on track after struggling for game time over the past few seasons.

Targett joins Rob Edwards’ promotion chasing side on a season-long loan, which may open the door to a free agent exit next summer now he’s out of contract at the end of the 2025/26 campaign.

A club statement from Newcastle reads:

Newcastle United full back Matt Targett has joined Championship side Middlesbrough on loan for the 2025/26 season.

‘The 29-year-old, who has featured 47 times for the Magpies since arriving from Aston Villa in 2022, makes the switch to Teesside in search of regular football after overcoming injury setbacks in recent years.

He joins a Boro side who have started the season strongly under Rob Edwards and currently occupy second place in the table after winning all three of their opening Championship fixtures.

Everybody at Newcastle United wishes Matt well during his time at Middlesbrough.’
