Newcastle United have announced their official squad for the UEFA Champions League group phase, starting two weeks on Thursday at home to Barcelona!
FOUR senior players miss out, with club captain Jamaal Lascelles the most high-profile omission following the signing of former AC Milan centre-back Malick Thiaw.
Elsewhere, goalkeepers Mark Gillespie and John Ruddy are also absent from Newcastle ‘A List’, with Harrison Ashby failing to make the cut.
The ‘B List’ of additional players is set to feature youngsters like Lewis Hall, Lewis Miley and goalkeeper Max Thompson, although this list doesn’t need to be forwarded to UEFA until the day before a match.
See Eddie Howe’s full 21-man squad below:
Goalkeepers
Nick Pope, Aaron Ramsdale
Defenders
Sven Botman, Dan Burn, Fabian Schar, Malick Thiaw, Emil Krafth, Tino Livramento, Kieran Trippier
Midfielders
Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, Jacob Ramsey, Sandro Tonali, Joe Willock
Forwards
Nick Woltemade, Yoane Wissa, Will Osula, Harvey Barnes, Anthony Elanga, Anthony Gordon, Jacob Murphy
A shame for Lascelles in particular to see him miss out, but he can be proud of his efforts two seasons ago, delivering a true captains display as we beat PSG 4-1 at St James’ Park in one o the most memorable Newcastle wins of recent memory.

The continued presence of Gillespie is utterly pointless
Should have signed Forster IMO who would have been eligible for a spot without having to leave anyone else out unless I’m mistaken

You are mistaken.
If we registered Fraser Forster then we would simply have 22 slots filled with 3 goalkeepers in the squad and 3 missing slots for club trained players. Lascelles still wouldn’t be eligible.
Having said that, Gillespie is still an utterly pointless member of the squad. Presumably he stands behind the nets and collects the balls for the others

what I meant was we wouldn’t have had to leave a further player out to accommodate him in the squad.

No Lewis Hall?!?!

I can see you didn’t read it 😂

I’m confused, is this not our squad for the CL? What’s the difference between the “A” & “B” squads?

Entirely agree – do we really need all these other goalkeepers – unless no one else wants them ??
