Newcastle receive good & bad injury news – Yoane Wissa update after visiting specialist

As the dust began to settle on Newcastle United’s 1-0 win over Wolves last night, we finally got some concrete news on Yoane Wissa’s knee injury.

The 29-year-old went down awkwardly in Tuesday’s 3-2 defeat to Senegal and was then ruled out of this weekend’s game by Eddie Howe on Friday morning.

After a nervous wait and visit to see a specialist this week, the update is both good and bad news for Newcastle heading into a busy run of fixtures in the Premier League, Europe and Carabao Cup.

The good news is that he has NOT suffered a serious ACL injury, playing down fears that he will be missing several months less than two weeks after sealing a £55m move from Brentford on deadline day.

However, the bad news is that he is expected to miss the next 4-5 weeks, keeping him out until at least the next international break.

This will see the striker sit out our next SIX games, ruling him out of the following fixtures:

Thursday 18th September – Newcastle vs Barcelona (8pm – TNT Sports) Champions League

Sunday 21th September – Bournemouth vs Newcastle (2pm – Sky Sports) Premier League

Wednesday 24th September – Newcastle vs Bradford (7.45pm – Sky Sports+) Carabao Cup

Sunday 28th September – Newcastle vs Arsenal (4.30pm – Sky Sports) Premier League

Wednesday 1st October – Union SG vs Newcastle United (5.45pm – TNT Sports) Champions League

Sunday 5th October– Newcastle v Nottingham Forest (2pm – Sky Sports) Premier League

  1. Possibly off to two World Cup qualifiers at the end of this period. Club should block this until he is assessed as fully fit and ready to play for the club that paid 55 million for him and the player should accept this decision.
Luck won’t come into it then rather than not training fully for weeks and then playing two games.

  2. He will miss more games than you have listed above, if it’s 6 weeks, it’s after West Ham and he won’t be match fit so will have to be eased in.
With the CL games as well as Carabao cup game it’s a massive issue .
Very disappointed DR Congo let him play on after he got injured, should of hooked him right away not let it get worse and Wissa himself should of known better.

DR Congo next WC qualifiers are 6th and 13th Oct , I will be angry if he goes off to those two matches before fully over this injury.

He will be away again in December AFCON with group games 23rd,27th and 30th so away for the packed Christmas schedule . If DR Congo make it to Final, we won’t see him until after Jan 18th meaning he will of missed another 3 PL games in that month alone and 4 to 5 in December for group stage, so potentially 8 PL games missed over Dec and Jan .

  3. I just hope the state of the pitches in Morocco at AFCON are better, as looks like a rough dry pitch was responsible for Wissas injury, his foot getting stuck in turf when turning at speed.

  4. Honestly struggling with the spin there’s good news in there.
Best scenario is it’ll be feb before he gets a chance to get a run in the team with international games, Afcon and injury.
Nufc gambled on an instant return and it’s not started well.
Lots of dependence on BNW and Osula
