Newcastle player ratings from 4-1 win vs Bradford – One 9/10, three 8s and a few 6s

A professional performance and comfortable win as Newcastle United saw off Bradford City 4-1 to set up a Carabao Cup last 16 clash with Tottenham next month.

On a night where Joelinton and Will Osula both bagged braces, here are our marks out of 10 and comments on each player involved in last night’s win:

Starting 11

Ramsdale (7) – Comfortable on the ball and picked some nice passes to set up attacks. Punched a few high balls, solid handling and couldn’t do anything about Bradford’s thunderous strike to make it 3-1.

Krafth (6) – Steady and reliable defensively, but looked rusty in possession on his first appearance of the season, giving away the ball a few times and struggling to get things going in attack.

Thiaw (7) – Made some timely interceptions, looked strong, aggressive and comfortable on the ball once again. Another promising display from the German centre-back.

Botman (7.5) – Mopped up most things with minimal fuss. Rarely tested, but makes it look easy and oozed class on the ball with a few line breaking passes into midfield.

Hall (7) – Really helps our link up play down that left side, with his quality in possession, link play and ability to get out of tight spaces impressive. Almost got an assist after cutting the ball back for Bruno.

Bruno (9) – The best player on the pitch from start to finish. Pulled the strings all day, two assists and almost toyed with the Bradford midfield at times with a few lovely bits of skill. Probably should’ve scored but ran the show and delivered such a classy touch and pass to quickly put Osula through on goal to make it 2-0. Looked refreshed after his rest on Sunday.

Miley (8) – One or two poor giveaways aside, I thought the 19-year-old put in a really composed and matured display. Moved the ball quickly, often looked to play forward and snuffed out the danger well on more than one occasion to kill potential Bradford counter attacks.

Joelinton (8.5) – Got forward very well and arrived with two quality finishes in each half, taking a quick touch before firing home emphatically with low shots. Strong in the air, too, and was another player who looked stronger for the rest at Bournemouth.

Elanga (6) – Plenty of zip, pace and drive to his play, but couldn’t find the finish and his deliveries into the both were mixed. Looks like a player still adjusting to a very different style of play and needs a goal for his confidence.

Osula (8.5) – One calm finish in a one-vs-one and the other a tap in at the back post, but the standout was his movement, improved positioning and ability to last the full game. Pressed well and looked full of confidence late on. Could’ve got a hat-trick on another night, but made a mess of a big headed chance from Gordon’s inviting cross.

Gordon (7.5) – Will be dissapointed not to score, having a few efforts saved and another dragged wide, but I thought he set the tone from the off and looked sharp. Burst past his man, added some zip to our build up play and cut inside to great effect to set up big chances for Osula and Elanga.

Substitutes

Livramento (6.5) – Brought some energy down that left side as Hall began to fade. Created a chance soon after coming on.

Trippier (6) – A steady display after replacing Krafth for the final 30 minutes.

Woltemade (7.5) – Link up play so classy and a joy to watch. Created openings in tight spaces and superb with his back to goal.

Barnes (6.5) – A mixed bag. Nice assist for Osula’s second, but squandered a few good chances.

A Murphy (N/A) – Came on for the final few minutes, replacing Botman.

  1. Elanga reminds me of ASM insomuch as he seems to be all bluster with no actual plan, and couldn’t finish a pizza!
He’s also a bit like Miggy was when he first arrived. Speedy down the wing but hasn’t quite got the end product.

I thought you must be having a laugh praising Bruno and criticising Miley.
Okay, Miley’s poor clearance led to the Bradford goal but Bruno continues to give the ball away needlessly by just trying to be too clever close quarters.

The person I’m taking to is Woltemade. He touch close in is amazing..

Agree totally with your summary, early days but I’m wondering why we spent so much money on Elanga, as Osula looks better than him down the right.

  3. Same thought Murphy shows Elanga how it should be done when he plays . Where is his speed and cut in runs ? Give him time to adjust they say or have we thrown our money away .
