“I’d be amazed” – Howe reveals Miley shock and slice of luck for Newcastle United

Speaking to the media this morning, Eddie Howe offered an update on injuries but also spoke openly about Lewis Miley and Will Osula.

Starting with Miley, the boss revealed his shock at certain ‘supporters’ slating the teenager after last weekend’s 0-0 draw at Bournemouth, which saw the midfielder turn off his comments on X.

It was absurd, especially given his age, and although the 19-year-old has responded well with a superb display against Bradford on Wednesday, Howe has encouraged Miley to block out the vocal minority, only listen to those who matter in his life and not let it impact his confidence when he steps onto the pitch:

“I was aware of there being something (some criticism),” Howe said. “I’d be amazed if that was the case because he’s so talented and so young. It’s easy to forget just how young he is.

“He’s very mature for his age though, and we encourage the players to surround themselves with the people they trust.”

“I would tell him to listen to people who matter in life, like family and friends. He is an outstanding player. We will treat him like the talent he is.”

“He is strong mentally, but it’s our job to protect the players. It’s so important they blank out the noise and maintain that confidence when they enter the pitch.”

Howe then discussed Will Osula’s brace against Bradford and a much-improved display, believing Newcastle and the player are benefiting from keeping the Dane on Tyneside despite him almost joining Frankfurt on deadline day.

In the end, it’s arguably been a lucky escape from the club, with Yoane Wissa’s injury leaving us counting on the 22-year-old to contribute as Nick Woltemade builds his fitness:

Discussing his need for minutes and failed move to Germany, Howe said: “The situation with Will, we felt and he felt, he needed to play regularly. After last year’s development behind the scenes.

“There was a need for him to play. That move did not happen, very much to our benefit and to Will’s benefit.

“He did a lot of work, individual work last season, focused on all aspects of his game. He is here and he has done well.

“He had an excellent performance on Wednesday, two brilliant goals, and it could have been more.”

  1. Every club has their internet morons and they should be ignored.
It’s just funny how it’s made into something more than that by the press or the BBC but they don’t seem to report on the other clubs internet goons.
It seems more like another attempt at causing mischief/disruption with our team.

  2. Not exactly sure how the people who are criticising him are in any way qualified to voice their opinions.
The best thing he can do is keep on pulling on the shirt and just laugh it off.
