Anthony Gordon grabbed his second goal in an England shirt as the Three Lions ran riot in Riga with a 5-0 away win over Latvia.
With fellow Magpie teammate Nick Woltemade finding himself on the scoresheet for Germany on Momday night, it was a welcome sight to see both our primary attackers get into goalscoring form ahead of the weekend.
But Tuesday night felt like we saw Gordon’s best performance of the campaign so far, as he showed what no other winger can currently offer Thomas Tuchel.
And Gordon wasn’t the only one of Eddie Howe’s stars to see out the international break with another win under their belt…
Gordon scores in 5-0 win
Gordon grabbed the opener against Latvia as England continued their unbeaten qualifying campaign and officially confirmed their place at the 2026 World Cup next summer.
The 24-year-old looked as direct and energetic as ever on the left flank, latching onto an excellent through ball from John Stones, before cutting inside and finding the bottom corner for a brilliant goal to make it 1-0.
That is the Gordon I remember from 23/24, what a goal!

His first international goal since his maiden strike against the Republic of Ireland back in November, Gordon also completed 30 out 34 passes on Tuesday night, as well as all of his dribbling attempts.
Competition for the left wing spot in Tuchel’s England side is incredibly tough: Phil Foden, Noni Madueke, Marcus Rashford and even Cole Palmer can all play there.
But Gordon showcased tonight that his pace and finishing is a combination that none of the other players can quite offer, and if he continues to play like this for both club and country, it’s his starting place to lose.
Burn off the bench and another Tonali win
Unfortunately, Dan Burn was left on the bench by Tuchel, only coming on just after 70 minutes to replace Stones.
It’s technically another clean sheet under his belt, but despite the excellent start to the season Burn has had at St James’ Park and club level, he faces a tough battle to displace the likes of Stones, Marc Guehi and Ezri Konsa as one of the starting centre-backs.
One player who will have no doubts about starting for his country moving forward is Sandro Tonali, as the maestro from Milan played 90 minutes for Italy in their 3-0 win over Israel last night.
But whether or not Italy actually make the World Cup is a different question altogether. They’re sat three points behind Norway in Group I, but Erling Haaland and co. have a staggering +26 goal difference over Italy’s +10.
With just two games to go, Gattuso’s side need to not only beat Moldova in November, but hope Estonia can at least snatch a point of Norway, and Italy will then need to beat the Group leaders to guarantee their qualification to the World Cup proper: a first World Cup appearance since the 2014 group stage.
