Alan Shearer reveals Yoane Wissa dilemma

Six weeks on from his deadline day arrival at Newcastle United, we are yet to see Yoane Wissa kick a ball for the club.

A knee injury suffered on international duty will keep him out until early November, with a recent setback extending his absence to two months.

Alan Shearer has been discussing his £55m move and the tough decision awaiting the 29-year-old in the months ahead, questioning if he should be showing loyalty to Newcastle over representing DR Congo at the African Cup of Nations given his lack of involvement so far.

Wissa is due in Morocco for their opening game of AFCON on 23rd December, meaning he could miss our final two games of the festive period and a chunk of January.

Shearer accepts it’s a tough ask for the striker to suddenly pick club over country, but did question his decision to play two international games back in September after a lack of pre-season, which ultimately contributed towards his injury.

“It will be a really difficult decision for Wissa not to go to AFCON because you always want to represent your country,” Shearer said when speaking to Betfair.

“But what I would say is, because of him not training or playing during the summer, he could’ve shown more responsibility in not playing as much as he did in those two games when he went away on international duty and hadn’t played at all.”

“But it’s really tough to say to someone they can’t and won’t represent their country when it means so much. And we know AFCON is huge and players want to play in that tournament.

“It’ll be a tough ask, but I understand that there’ll be a lot of people thinking that he’s never played for Newcastle and he needs to show some loyalty towards us.

“I get it and understand that point-of-view because Newcastle shelled out a lot of money on him and he hasn’t been able to take to the St James’ Park turf as yet. It’d be a really tough decision for him and Newcastle. Whether there’s a way around it, I’m not so sure.”

Missing AFCON would be a real shame for Wissa on a personal level, but he may have a tricky decision to make in two months time should he struggle for minutes behind Nick Woltemade on his return to fitness.

  1. Given one of the reasons he wanted to come to us is he wanted to play in Champions league , it’s not panned out for him so far. If he’s fit enough for AFCON and goes he will miss both the PSV and PSG games not to mention the busy Christmas period in league. And what if he breaks down again whilst away, not sure his Country give much thought to his daily job given they played him for 2 full games on the back of no regular games prior to linking up with them.
Tough decision all round for him and club

  2. His country ain’t paying his wages or hospital and treatment bills nor did they invest over £55 million .. not playing is damaging his career and opportunities to compete and win a trophy and play in the champions league ..playing for Congo ? .. playing in the U.K. has made him a millionaire ..show some respect when you look at your bank balance instead of selfish parasitic behaviour
