Newcastle’s PSR position left the club in a mess and desperate for sales last June, seeing two of our most exciting young talents at the time leave for Premier League rivals.
Alongside Yankuba Minteh’s £30m switch to Brighton, we saw Elliot Anderson leave his boyhood club for Nottingham Forest, who only paid £15m for the midfielder and saw Odysseas Vlachodimos head in the opposite direction in an odd deal to sum up the bizarre workings of modern-day football.
Almost 18 months on, Anderson has not only established himself as one of the top talents in the Premier League, he’s also becoming a key part of Thomas Tuchel’s England side, impressing alongside Declan Rice once again as our place in the 2026 World Cup was secured on Tuesday night.
Eddie Howe admitted earlier this month that he’d love to have the Geordie midfielder back on Tyneside, but it seems Newcastle will be facing intense competition for his signature should we look to do a deal in 2026.
According to a new report from The Mirror, both Man City and Chelsea have their sights set on the 22-year-old.
Pep Guardiola is thought to be a big fan, with chief reporter Jeremy Cross reporting that a £75m bid is on the cards as Man City contemplate the long-term futures of Nico Gonzalez and Rodri.
Free-spending Chelsea also being in the mix could pose a problem, as the Blues are notorious for offering huge sums of money and massive wages which Newcastle, at this stage, are unable to compete with.
Anderson may well have his heart set on a return to Tyneside, especially as that left-sided role could open up in the years ahead as Joelinton nears his 30s.
However, we’ll have to fend off some big competition, pay massive money and make use of Ross Wilson’s links to Forest if we wish to bring the Geordie Maradona back to St James’ Park.

Fantastic player & I, as a Forest fan, am so pleased to have him with us. PSR is a joke as, tbf, you should never have been put in that position of having to sell one of your young talents. Genuinely I feel for you. I used to worry about MGW going but now Anderson has established himself as our most important player. If he left for a huge fee then, personally, I’d love him to come back to you for all the right reasons as opposed to Man U (car crash) or City (robotise him like Grealish). Like Newcastle as a club/ fans ❤️

If Forest give young mcatee more games ( why buy the lad if he’s just on the bench and gets too little time to influence the game!) he will be on the same level as Anderson…if not better. Give him a freedom role ( don’t coach it out of him!) to showcase his skills and increase his confidence then if Anderson does go he can be an ideal replacement. I’m a Forest fan and unfortunately Morgan Gibbs white has gone from superb to below average and he needs dropping to fight for his place back in the team.
