It was a big night for England last night, as the Three Lions officially secured their sport in next year’s World Cup in North America.
A 5-0 win in Latvia ensured our place, with England not only winning all six qualifiers but also conceding zero goals during that period.
Anthony Gordon started both England’s games over the break and opened the scoring in last night’s win, cutting in from the left and firing into the far corner with a brilliant low strike.
After the game, Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel spoke highly of the Newcastle winger, hailing how direct and relentless he is, describing the intensity of his running on and off the ball as “so, so good.”
“I think it’s a very good performance,” Tuchel said. “I think Anthony deserved to stay in the team. He is a direct player, I think this is his biggest strength, to go direct and go again and again.
“To have this repetition in his intensity. He just collects high intensity runs, he collects metres in sprints and this is so, so good.
“It’s important that he knows his strengths and plays exactly into his strengths. Now we play a high-press and he’s important against the ball.
“He was clinical today with the first goal that calmed our nerves and set the tone and set the game in the right direction. So, well played again. Another good performance from him.”
At this point, the left wing spot feels like Gordon’s to lose, but he must step up his performances for Newcastle to make sure of that, with Marcus Rashford impressing for Barcelona and Jack Grealish fighting for a recall after shining at Everton.
Dan Burn only managed 20 minutes in Latvia after being an unused substitute in last week’s 3-0 win over Wales, but the Geordie giant has made a big impression behind the scenes and remains in with a good chance of making next year’s squad.
