Newcastle to re-sign Elliot Anderson? – Craig Hope reveals latest & potential trump card

When Elliot Anderson was sold in the summer of 2024 to Nottingham Forest, there was real disappointment in our fanbase, but a general acceptance at the time that the youngster wasn’t getting the minutes he needed here, and was unlikely to displace either of Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton or Sandro Tonali any time soon.

Over a year later, and having seen the player that Anderson has become, many fans now believe we should have just taken the points deduction and kept both Anderson and Yankuba Minteh.

The academy graduate has been one of the standout English players in the Premier League in 2025, resulting in him being called up to the National Team by Thomas Tuchel, and a front runner to be on the plane for the World Cup next summer.

But as rumours run rife about a potential big money move in the foreseeable future, there is still a faint chance that the local lad makes a much-anticipated return to Tyneside once his time at the City Ground comes to an end.

Anderson return MIGHT be on the cards

According to The Mail’s Craig Hope, there is slight optimism that Newcastle could bring Elliot Anderson back to St James’ Park.

Asked ‘could Elliot Anderson end up back at Newcastle?’ in his latest Q&A piece for The Mail, Hope hinted that newly-appointed Sporting Director Ross Wilson, formerly of Nottingham Forest, could be the key.

The pair are said to have a strong relationship from their shared time at the club last season, and it’s well documented that Howe remains a huge fan of the midfielder.

Asked about Anderson’s potential return, Hope said: “In short, yes, there’s a chance. Interestingly, he has a very good relationship with Wilson from their time together at Nottingham Forest.

“While there is no suggestion of any moves being made, the admiration Eddie Howe and Wilson have for Anderson – and vice-versa – means that he is certain to feature on a long list of targets heading into next summer or beyond.”

This comes after the Geordie talent was linked with a £75m switch to Man City or Chelsea earlier this week, showing the high-level of interest emerging in the former Newcastle youngster.

Anderson stands a very good chance of being one of Tuchel’s chosen midfielders for England’s World Cup campaign, it would be the best move for his career right now to stay committed to Forest for at least the rest of this season.

Wilson link could be key?

You would have to imagine that Wilson’s positive connection with Anderson isn’t the only advantage that he can bring to the table in any potential negotiations we may have with Forest in the future.

Knowing how Forest operate internally and over transfers could give us a slight advantage over the other clubs also linked with a move for Anderson.

Manchester United have also been linked with the 22-year-old over the past few days. But the prospect of playing under a Manager and Sporting Director both keen for you to join, coupled with a starting spot ready to be filled for your boyhood club could be all we need to convince Anderson should the opportunity present itself.
