One superb 9/10, three 8s and a struggling 6 – Newcastle player ratings vs Spurs

Another big win at St James’ Park as Newcastle United saw off Spurs 2-0 to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

Here are our marks out of 10 and comments on each player involved:

Starting 11

Ramsdale (8) – Very impressive. Made some important saves – the stop to deny Sarr was superb – but also added an extra dimension in attack with his ball-playing ability. Off his line quickly and a few good punches from crosses, too.

Krafth (7) – Just seems to slot in seamlessly and produces a 7/10 performance. Didn’t do anything spectacular but is dependable and a vital squad member.

Schar (8) – Rose highest to score the opening goal and made it his job to rough up Richarlison! Demonstrated his passing range which is second to none in the Premier League.

Thiaw (8.5) – Has adapted to the English game seamlessly and continues to prove that he was a £34m bargain. Broke up numerous plays with his interception directly leading to the second goal. Undroppable.

Burn (7.5) – Captain for the night who put in his customary solid performance highlighted by some wonderful crosses from the left. Not sure about him trying to dribble around players though!

Willock (7.5) – Given a rare opportunity to start and he made a good fist of things. Showed good energy and looked better than he has in a long time. Got the assist for the second goal with a lovely cross.

Tonali (9) – Running out of superlatives to describe just how good he is. Covered every blade of glass in defence and was phenomenal in possession. Particularly enjoyed him toying with the Spurs players near the end of the game and bursting past Simons to win the ball back late on.

Ramsey (7) – Showed flashes of the player we know he is but is still working himself back to full fitness. Can be proud of his performance and will only get better.

Elanga (6) – Probably the only real disappointment overall. Almost looks like he’s trying too hard to impress but did find it hard to beat impressive one-vs-one defender Djed Spence. Needs a bit of luck to spark his season. Got on the end of a cross and nearly caused an own goal off Danso.

Barnes (7) – Will be disappointed not to get himself on the scoresheet after dragging a shot wide and then rattling the cross bar from a scissor kick. Did well but not well enough to dislodge Gordon.

Woltemade (7.5) – Grabbed what’s quickly becoming a trademark header (thought he couldn’t head the ball?). More impressive than that was his hold up play and ability to pick a pass, with his quick turn and pass to Barnes a highlight in the first half. Rarely makes the wrong decision. Top player.

Substitutes

Osula (6) – Typically energetic but no real opportunity to build on his performance against Fulham.

Joelinton (6) – Wasn’t on the pitch long but collected his standard yellow card for a hefty challenge on Kudus!

Trippier (6.5) – Tidy and efficient as we have come to expect. Whipped in some decent corners towards the end.

Guimaraes (NR) – On for the final few minutes.

Gordon (NR) – See above!

  1. Ramsey played very well and does link up very well.
Elanga is not taking the right decisions trying to take on players when he should be passing and losing the ball, and not using his pace when he has the opportunity at the right time.
