Joelinton blow, brilliant news for Thiaw, new Wissa hint and nervous wait for Gordon

With yet another international break almost upon us, there is good and bad news to share regarding a few Newcastle United stars hoping to represent their country next week.

The major news today centres around Malick Thiaw, who has won back his place in the German national team following his outstanding form on Tyneside.

After delivering yet another commanding and classy display in last night’s 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao in the Champions League, Julian Nagelsmann has selected the 24-year-old alongside Nick Woltemade for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Luxembourg and Slovakia.

Discussing his call-up over two years on from Thiaw’s last international cap, Nagelsmann said: “Malick Thiaw is a regular started in the Premier League and has become a key player for his side ever since his move to England.”

Joelinton dropped

Moving to South America, Bruno Guimaraes has been selected by Carlo Ancelotti for Brazil’s upcoming friendlies against Senegal and Tunisia, but Joelinton drops out.

Big Joe was included in their last 26-man squad, featuring in Asia as he and Bruno took on Japan and South Korea. However, there is no place for the midfielder this time as his hopes of making their squad for next year’s World Cup hang in the balance.

Wissa hint

DR Congo have a massive game next Thursday, taking on Cameroon on 13th November in a World Cup semi-final play-off match in Morocco.

It was suggested last month that Yoane Wissa was targeting a return to action for this Sunday’s trip to Brentford, but the 29-year-old has not been included in DR Congo’s squad.

A wise move and one most would’ve predicted given he’s yet to kick a ball for his club so far this season, although it tells me that he is still a week or two away from playing and won’t feature until after the international break.

Gordon wait

As for our England stars, Thomas Tuchel won’t name his Three Lions squad for upcoming games against Serbia and Albania until tomorrow, but his selection could give us a good idea of how Anthony Gordon’s hip is doing.

He could probably do with a week off and period of recovery, but you just know he’ll be eager to impress as he hopes to nail down a spot at the World Cup.

Dan Burn is another one to watch and Lewis Hall a possible option for England’s U21s now he’s fit again, with Lewis Miley another likely to join the Young Lions squad.
