It had been a tricky few weeks for Nick Woltemade prior to last night’s World Cup qualifier for Germany.
Since scoring in our 2-0 win over Spurs in the Carabao Cup, the big man has struggled to have an influence in games or receive any good service in our last three matches against Brentford, Bilbao and West Ham.
But, after failing to score in his last three, Woltemade was back with a bang for Germany on Friday night, scoring a second-half brace to help his country beat Luxembourg 2-0 and move top of Group A in World Cup qualifying.
As you can see below, his first is a neat finish with his left foot after some superb wing play from Leroy Sane, with his second a mixture of lovely movement and a clinical right-footed strike to fire into the opposite corner.

The two goals take him up to 10 in all competitions over 2025/26 for club and country, featuring four in the Premier League, one in the Champions League, one in the Carabao Cup, a goal for Stuttgart earlier this season and three for Germany in his last two outings.
We can learn two things from this. 1) Create chances for the big man and he is clinical and 2) he and we need to find a way to get him in the box more, as he’s been starved off touches and chances in the danger zone, despite doing so much good work when coming short.
Elsewhere last night, Malick Thiaw came on for Germany in the final 15 minutes, while Lewis Hall played 65 minutes for England’s Under-21s, starting alongside Lewis Miley in a win over Ireland.

Olly :
2-0 was hardly a big win, however the clips of the goals show how well Germany played the ball to his feet and the movement of his team mates.
Unfortunately we don’t have that movement and cohesion at Newcastle we do not play to his strengths.
