Newcastle United are back in Premier League action tonight, hoping to make it three league wins in a row after seeing off Man City (2-1) and Everton (4-1) over the past 10 days.
Ahead of the match, Paul Merson has been sharing his thoughts on both sides and previewing the game, where he’s backing Newcastle to continue their superb recent record against the North London side.
After four wins from our last four meetings with Spurs on Tyneside, the Sky Sports pundit is backing us to come away with a 3-1 win against a Spurs side under “severe pressure” after Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at home to Fulham.
Merson has also spoke highly, once again, of the “amazing” Nick Woltemade, believing the big German is a rare breed in modern day football and capable of scoring all types of goals after that lob over Jordan Pickford last weekend.
Writing in his latest prediction piece for Sportskeeda, Merson had this to say on the game, the toxicity at Spurs and our star striker who he’s backing to score again:
“Tottenham are under severe pressure now. Even though both Newcastle and Tottenham are on the same number of points, their trajectory is the exact opposite. Newcastle are on the rise by winning their last two, while Spurs have now lost twice in a row!
“I heard Thomas Frank reacting to Tottenham fans booing Guglielmo Vicario for his error in the 2-1 loss to Fulham by accusing them of not being true supporters. I can assure you that his comments will not go down well with Spurs fans. You can say that while being manager of Brentford and it might work, but not at Tottenham, not after what they have been through over the years.
“No one likes getting stick from your own fans. But the supporters spend serious money to watch matches and when their team loses to Fulham at home, they are free to make their feelings known.
“Nick Woltemade has been amazing for Newcastle. I’ve waxed lyrical about him all season. He scores all sorts of goals, lovely little lob over the goalkeeper against Everton, we don’t see that a lot in modern football these days. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t score in this game!
“Tottenham take one step forward and then go three steps back. Frank is under serious pressure after his comments too. I expect Newcastle to win this game. So basically, it will be a cup final for Frank when Spurs face his former club Brentford on Saturday.”
Prediction: Newcastle 3-1 Tottenham
Spurs have lost their last three games, they’ve got an awful recent record at St James’ Park and have shipped nine goals to PSG and Arsenal in their last two away trips.
We can’t underestimate them as Frank fights to keep his job, but I do think we’ll get the job done and build on what was a superb win at Everton over the weekend, making it SEVEN wins in a row at home in the process.
Howay the lads!

Proper banana skin this game if we let it, as manager needs win badly.
We should have too much for them though, they played quite well up here when losing 2-0 and did pose a threat so concentration needed.
