It looked like we were going to be making it three wins in a row in the Premier League, but a late Tottenham equaliser led to a share of the points. Below we rate the performances of each Newcastle United player on Tuesday night.
Starting 11
Aaron Ramsdale – 5 – There were examples of his good distribution on Tuesday. However, he will be disappointed at the second Tottenham goal. He came to punch the ball without getting distance on it and then couldn’t get to the scuffed finish. If he had got a better initial contact, the goal could have been prevented.
Tino Livramento – 6 – The right side didn’t click as well as it had at the weekend. Livramento is great in the middle third, but his crossing wasn’t the best on Tuesday. It was a solid performance, without the highs of the Everton game.
Malick Thiaw – 6.5 – Thiaw has proven himself to be a very good centre back. His role in Tottenham’s equaliser wasn’t great though. There were some nice defensive contributions, however, including one display of strength to prevent Randal Kolo Muani having a big chance, and some good line breaking passes in the first half.
Dan Burn – 5 – Like Thiaw, there were some good moments of defending, but he will believe he could have done more to help the team win the game. Two aerial balls have resulted in goals being conceded and Burn is in the team to deal with those. The first will be one he wants to forget.
Lewis Hall – 7.5 – The pick of the defenders was Lewis Hall. He was excellent at pressing high and winning the ball in Tottenham’s third. As the game went on, he tired, but he comes out of the game with credit having faced a difficult opponent.
Sandro Tonali – 5.5 – The Italian couldn’t really get into the game before being taken off with a knock at half time. Set piece deliveries were poor. Hopefully the injury isn’t too bad and he can play at the weekend.
Lewis Miley – 6 – The midfield didn’t seem to have the correct blend in the first half. Miley offered a threat in the final third, with two good chances coming his way. Unfortunately, the right side didn’t carry the same threat that it did at Everton. Still, he was tidy on the ball and won lots of aerial duels.
Joelinton – 5 – It wasn’t the best performance from Joelinton. He gave the ball away when the team were in promising attacking situations on a few occasions. In hindsight, he should have been brought off for either Jacob Ramsey or Joe Willock, as there was space to exploit in the Tottenham half. Good first half, bad second.
Jacob Murphy – 5 – Like Joelinton, he wasn’t at his best. A few promising attacking situations broke down with his poor decisions. In the second half, he wasted a great chance when Bruno played him through on goal. The right side didn’t thrive on Tuesday and he was a major reason why it didn’t.
Nick Woltemade – 6 – It was a solid performance without being spectacular. The assist for the opening goal was very good and he was unlucky to have a header cleared off the line. The German is growing into life in the Premier League. Tired late on and got the ball caught under his feet a few times.
Harvey Barnes 6.5 – Barnes was a threat in the first half and looks to be confident at the moment. He had one good chance that was saved and he continued to be direct in his actions.
Substitutes
Bruno Guimaraes – 8 – It was a great second half performance from the captain as he injected attacking quality into the game. His goal was a great strike, while his through ball to Jacob Murphy was a thing of beauty. He was unfortunate that it didn’t lead to a goal. Howe may have some regrets about leaving him out of the starting eleven.
Anthony Gordon 7.5 – This was a better performance from Gordon, as he played a role in both goals. His penalty was taken well, while the positivity in his dribbling was impressive. Hopefully this is the start of an upturn in form.
Anthony Elanga – 6 – He didn’t manage to get into the game in the same way that Gordon did down the other side. Some link up play with Tino but it never amounted to much.
Fabian Schar – N/A – The sub may be one that Howe regrets as it didn’t have the intended impact.

Everyone who got overly excited and obsessed with having a goalie good with the ball at his feet, might start to realise, it’s not the be all and end all. Not saying Ramsdale not a good keeper, but don’t think we concede Spurs 2nd goal with Pope between the sticks.

WE missed a lot of opportunities again why does the manager not bring in a midfielder that knows were the goal is we have a midfield that scored about 15 goals in two seasons and the defenders again to blame will some tell the manager that the pensioners should be put out to grass.and find some that are at least watchable come on man or go

I think the discrepancy in score between Tino and Hall is odd. The first goal Hall just let his man cross the ball in and it wasn’t the first time in the game. He has great feet and passing ability but defensively he was weak yesterday.
Tino’s crosses may not have been his best but he completed more passes than Hall and attempted more crosses. In addition, he barely allowed an attack down his side.

Darren – Pope has become the latest scapegoat unfortunately, I remember fans wanting Dubs out for ages, and then somehow being shocked at when he came in with Pope’s injury last year the fact he was (maybe only slightly) better than Pope with the ball at his feet. He always had been, how could that be a surprise. I do wonder what some people watch sometimes. Ramsdale is obviously better than both, but there’s a reason nobody has been desperate to sign him – he’s just quite an average goalkeeper overall.

Burn was at fault for the first goal letting Romero get in front of him at the near post.
How many defenders did we have in front of goal when Romero scored a fluke of an overhead kick, nobody actually went to clear the ball.
Ramsdale’s punch was also as weak as water.
Midfielder again trying to pass the ball side footing a clear chance FFS put your laces through it Miley, and he’s not the only one, it’s as if they are frightened to score.
Hall good going forward but he has to defend first of all.
