A worrying display in many ways, but it’s three precious points and a rare win away from home for Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United.
Here are our marks out of 10 and comments on each player involved in last night’s 3-1 win…
Starting 11
Nick Pope (7) – A few important stops with his hands and feet to stop Burnley from equalising in that second half. Kicking poor but he did the basics well on his return.
Lewis Miley (7) – Another strong, composed and reliable display at right-back. 18 defensive contributions and stayed disciplined in the chaos. Lost one header at the back post to Tchaouna but wasn’t punished.
Malick Thiaw (6.5) – A solid display without being at his Rolls Royce best. Won most of his duels but was sometimes caught in no man’s land as Burnley ran beyond our back line.
Fabian Schar (6) – Some wayward moments and iffy clearances, along with that trademark foul where he smashes into the back of his man needlessly to give away a cheap free kick. Made up for that with a clearance off the line and pass out to Gordon just before Joelinton’s opener.
Lewis Hall (7.5) – Drove us on down the left, showing flashes of real quality and athleticism on the ball while others were floundering. Almost got an assist for Murphy and did very well to soldier on after twisting his ankle. Didn’t always do enough to stop crosses, but wasn’t given enough support from Gordon.
Bruno Guimaraes (7) – A mixed bag, but he stepped up in key moments, in the end. Set up two big chances, one of which was wasted by Gordon, and scored that vital third to settle any late nerves with a calm finish from range. In between that, he looked a little leggy at times and gave away the ball in some poor areas.
Sandro Tonali (4) – Not sure what is up with him, as he was a shadow of his best self once again here. Bypassed far too easily as Burnley’s midfield broke past him far too easily, was lucky not to be booked and failed to show his quality on the ball. One of his poorest displays in a black and white shirt.
Joelinton (8) – A strong display on the big Joe’s first start since Leveruksen. Brilliant finish to give us the lead after 65 seconds, looked after the ball well with some sharp passing and put in an important shift defensively. An influential display on and off the ball.
Harvey Barnes (5) – Not suited to playing on the right. Got the shot off that ultimately led to Wissa’s goal to make it 2-0, but wasted a one-vs-one that Dubravka smothered and was anonymous at times.
Yoane Wissa (7) – Showed his fox-in-the-box ability to pounce on another rebound on his first league start. Looked decent in the air (missed header aside) and gave us an outball. Better service up to him is needed, but it’s clear he’ll score goals and give us something to Woltemade; even when feeding on scraps.
Anthony Gordon (4.5) – Such a frustrating display. Started superbly with that assist for Joelinton and had Walker on a booking, but spent most of the game diving to win fouls and failing to track back.
Substitutes
Jacob Murphy (4) – Offered so little. Slow to react at both ends of the pitch and missed a big chance to make it 3-1, even if Wissa may have been offside in the build up.
Nick Woltemade (5) – On for the last 10. Some decent bits of hold up play, but one poor pass on the break when a chance opened up.
Jacob Ramsey (5) – Tried to drive us forward late on but it didn’t really happen for him. Shrugged off it after breaking into the box. Imagine Joelinton will have won back his place in our midfield three.
Joe Willock (N/A) – Only came on for the final few minutes.

When Hall went to head the ball for Burnley’s first goal Gordon just stood and watched also didn’t track the goal scorer, 4.5 generous.
I think a few of these low scorer’s are looking for a January move, but the way they are playing no one would want them.
