On Monday morning, Ruben Amorim’s sacking at Man Utd left much of the footballing world debating who could be next in line at Old Trafford.
Several names have been linked, with Eddie Howe mentioned by The Telegraph as a manager with strong admirers on the red side of Manchester, but there is little fear on Tyneside that he’d make the switch.
Naturally, Howe was asked about those links and his position at the club in this morning’s press conference, where he not only ruled out a switch to Man Utd but discussed his future at Newcastle and the key to keeping him happy.
Howe stated that nothing would tempt him away at this moment, insisting he’s “very happy” at this point, but he did talk up the importance of maintaining strong relationships and a sense of unity behind the scenes now a new executive structure is in place following David Hopkinson and Ross Wilson’s appointments.
Responding to the Man Utd links and discussing his future in general, Howe said this on Tuesday morning:
“Nothing has changed. I am 100% here.
“Would anything tempt me away? No, not at this current time. The most important thing is happiness in the role and relationships with people around me.
“That’s not always been consistently good so I think things can change at any club. But at the moment I’m very happy. We have made some great appointments in the key positions that needed filled.
“I’m happy as long as I can be the best version of myself to help the club, and we have unity.
“I have an unbelievable relationship with the board and I consider myself very lucky to have that. Very few managers have the time, the trust, the confidence…if you have all of those things you have a higher chance of being successful.
“I’m really happy at the moment and hopefully that stays for a long time.”
The third line feels like a reminder of previous tensions that existed off the pitch, perhaps pointing to the brief but chaotic Paul Mitchell era that impacted much of our summer transfer window in 2024.
But the message is clear. Howe is happy, the current relationships remain strong, he’s going nowhere anytime soon and he’d like to be here for many years to come. However, it’s also up to Newcastle to maintain that harmony.
