Pardew: “It’s important to keep your best players.”

Pardew keeping hold of stars?
Alan Pardew is starting to find himself in a rather privileged position at Newcastle United having all but secured Premier League survival.

The manager has inherited a team that was brought together by relegation and Chris Hughton, and now has a wedge of cash to spend in the summer when he can fully put his own stamp on the club. Time will tell whether or not he can do that in a positive way, but given that his pay packet is heavily performance based I would suggest that it’s not only us fans who are wanting Pardew to succeed at United. More money for Pardew means a better NUFC for us all.

Part of the rebuilding process, if you can call it that, will be making sure that we can keep hold of our better players over the summer. It’s been discussed to death before, but the importance of keeping Joey Barton and Jose Enrique at the club can’t be understated.

The pair of them will be entering the last twelve months of their contract over the summer so they will both require new deals. Given the form that they have both been in this season there will surely be interest from other clubs and nothing is certain until, or if, they both sign on the dotted line for us.

All talk of contracts has been put on hold until our survival is assured, but with a season of Premier League football next year looking ever more likely the time to start thinking about sitting down with these two players is edging ever closer.

Of course, keeping Barton and Enrique at the club will be important, as is keeping hold of other top players such as Fabricio Coloccini, Cheik Tiote and Hatem Ben Arfa. If any are sold, which I think (hope) is unlikely, then it makes a bit of a mockery of trying to build the strong team that we have been told that we are trying to build.

Referring to Joey Barton mainly, although I detect a hint of intention towards other players, Alan Pardew had this to say to The Chronicle:

“It’s important to keep your best players – and our best players showed up on Saturday, big style. We had some outstanding performances within that team on Saturday – Joey Barton was one of them.”

There is a bit more in the article itself, but hearing about Kevin Nolan struggling to try and keep anything down ahead of the Wolves game is probably not the kind of conversation to be having this Monday lunchtime. It’ll probably be worth a full article on other sites.

I hope nobody is having Pizza? 😀

There are many many questions that need answering before the next season kicks off. The first one, will we survive, is nearly answered, but with that come a whole host of other questions such as how much will we spend on players, what players will we see rock up at St James’, and which players will rock out of St James’ (Ryan Taylor please please please).

Only time will tell of course, but at least Pardew recognises who are our important players and who we need to keep. To be fair, it’s probably blatantly obvious who we need to keep.

It’s one thing saying it though and another thing doing it. Talk is cheap, actions speak louder than words, talk the talk, or any other amount of cliche’d sayings could apply to this though.

It’s time to put their money were their mouth is! 😉

  1. If we keep Barton I’ll be a very happy man. We need to keep him, for me he is our best player now Carroll has left. Carroll only scored because of Barton.

I keep saying this, we havn’t won a game without Barton this season – we have to keep him, he wants to stay so give him the deal he wants.

  2. However, it appears that our scouse friends of the red persuasion are intersted in Jose AND Jonas now.

Why don’t they just Rooney off and find there own players!

It’ll be the Pope next, just wait and see.

  3. I’ll be interested to see where Liverpool are going to get all of this cash from? Or where the illusion that they have all of this cash is coming from?

It can’t be from January surely? I mean they did actually make money out of that window so they made zero investment there….

  4. Andrew- Not a chance, a little fine at most… something which will really effect him and make a huge dint in his 250k a week. 😈

  5. I’ll be interested to see where Liverpool are going to get all of this cash from? Or where the illusion that they have all of this cash is coming from?

Their new owners promised a large sum for transfers last window- but with the sale of Babel and Torres they actually pretty much broke even. So I assume they are roling it over.

  6. MDS – I remember when Keegan told us we were going to break transfer records……. I’m still waiting…….. We know what happened there.

    Words are cheap.

  7. Very true Toonsy as we all know. But that NESV group that bought LPool is in the news a lot over here. They feel like they got a steal and have a history of splashing cash. I hate LPool as well, but fear they are in the best financial position of the big clubs moving forward.

We will be hearing a lot from the in the coming months as they apear to be in the market for LB, wingers and another striker.

  8. Liverpool owners also have to find a soluation to their staduim problems , either build a new stadium or re-develop anfield , either way they are gonna be spenidng alot of money on it , Im sure they are also paying alot of their players champions league esq wages so i dont know eher they think they are going to get money from….time will tell….ar****le’s 😆

  9. What happened to the debt when they bought Liverpool? Only £185 mill got wiped, which means they have a similar debt to us, only they are still paying interest on it.

They don’t have a Champions League income anymore and if they want to pump a load of money then it’s fine, but it will affect them when they want to get into Europe…..

  10. I read that they have 60M in stadium debt left

Dan- how big is your car? Can you fit those three and take them to Merseyside please?

  11. They also have Comoili as Dof ( or some other sort of title ) who also has a poor track record in the transfer market imo

  12. dont worry aboot l/pool daglish will stuff them right up imo, unless clarke is running the show he he takes a back seat and stays as a fig head and takes the praise 👿

  13. Anyway, fook Liverpool. Needless to say that I hope they drown in a sea of their own piss and take any owner who tries to save them with them.

Nowt against the owners like, but my hatred for (pre-Carroll this started) Liverpool is that string that I wouldn’t actually mind seeing some well intentioned people losing a fortune at the expense of Liverpool FC going out of business.

  14. Johno- I believe modric and bale were signed under his watch- but Spurs fans definately give him mixed reviews

  15. West Ham fans racially abusing their own players families at Upton Park. That’ll motivate them to get them out the shite 😯

  16. Anyway, fook Liverpool.

Well said- I wish NESV hadn’t bought the club becuase a) I think they will do well, and b) I like to see my countrymen have success in world football (unless they are in anyway affiliated with S—–land) , but cannot bring myself to wish anything but disaster for Lpool.

  17. Comolli – Is this guy obsessed with us or just lazy?

When he was at Tottenham, he treated us like a feeder club or if he couldn’t do that, he just tried to sign any player we were linked with.

Now he is at Liverpool, they’ve already signed Carroll and are after Tiote and Enrique and are after Sylvain Marveaux, who we have been linked with – what a shock.

No doubt any other players we have who show potential will be linked with Liverpool too.

Why does this guy hate us so much?

  18. Keep in mind that the previous carpetbagger owners have a lawsuit against Liverpool as they feel they did not get just compensation in the sale to NESV. That will cost Liverpool in legal fees and whatever settlement they have to pay out. From that, I’d say Liverpool will be a low-profile club this Summer.
