How are we doing with home grown players?

Home grown, but how many others are there?
I received an e-mail earlier from a chap who will only ever be know as Eric asking about our home grown players quota and whether, with our current policy of recruiting from Europe, it is something that we should be concerned about.

The rules state that within our registered squad of 25 players, eight of them must be “home grown” players. Home-grown players do not have to be English; home-grown players are defined as those who “irrespective of nationality or age, have been affiliated to the FA or Welsh FA for a period of three seasons or 36 months prior to 21st birthday.”

But with our transfer eyes firmly locked onto the French and Dutch leagues in search of value for money, is it possible to keep within the rules this season? Or the next? Or the one after that? We’ve already lost a couple of home grown players such as Alan Smith and Danny Guthrie, and with rumours over the future of Leon Best, Fraser Forster and Danny Simpson we could still lose a few more over the summer.

The good news is that we are fine next season. We have Tim Krul, Steve Harper, Rob Elliot, Steven Taylor, Mike Williamson, Ryan Taylor, James Perch, Dan Gosling and Shola Ameobi which makes nine, even if all the players mentioned previously leave the club in this transfer window.

Realistically though, I would suggest that a lot of those players won’t exactly be first choice long term aside from Tim Krul and Steven Taylor, and even Taylor’s place in the team, whilst assured right now, may be under threat if we manage to bring in a good central defender in the summer. With that in mind, how are we looking longer term?

Well next season Shane Ferguson will have to be named as part of the 25 man squad if he is to feature for us. The same will apply for Sammy Ameobi and James Tavernier as all three turn 21 before before next January which means they can sneak in unregistered this term but will have to be named next time around.

All in all we have little to worry about on that front, so rest easy Eric. It’s all in hand and I’m sure that it is something that all clubs have in their thoughts whilst they are assembling their squads.

Well, hopefully anyway!

  3. Aussie….I remember that one 😆 ….would usually not correct someones spelling, unless they corrected themselves incorrectly 😉

Teams often leave one of their better pen takers until last as that’s often the one with the most pressure…it’s a gamble though as last night proved.
Don’t agree with the theory of strikers going first, being a striker doesn’t mean they’re good pen takers, some of the best have been defenders, even keepers. It’s also about who does well at them in training and more importantly who has the balls to step up to the plate at the time, maybe Carroll did neither or was considered to inexperienced 😉

  16. Stoke are signing Ness from rangers after a “stringent medical” the lads had some really bad fitnesss problems in the past, This is on top of Woodgate, Upson and Palacios who have awful injury records and they are after Owen who is as bad if not worse.

If they are prepared to sign them what the **** is actually wrong with Bas knee, Might be a struggle for his agent(s) finding a willing club to take the risk for £7m and all the other fees on top for someone who is uninsurable…

  23. He’s an Aussie 19 year old defender Danish.. had a 14 odd day trial a few months back with Newcastle.. The team needs a bit of culture so he will be a good signing 🙂

Newcastle could be set to lose out on Luuk de Jong with reports in Germany claiming he is set to join Borussia Monchengladbach instead.

  32. I would have quite liked Beckham to be in team GB, he helped to get us the olympics and is a global icon so will attract lots of interest in the team/olympics.

      (Quote)

  33. Ice
yeah was thinking that myself, better he went to the bundesliga than to someone like liverpool or tottenham.

      (Quote)

  34. Newcastle play mind games with twente by saying they are now going after the Swedish striker now insted of deJong, so twente return the favour by saying that deJong will now be sold to a german club… your serve Newcastle 🙂 🙂

      (Quote)

  35. DeJong = Gamero – so many parallels with the stories we were being fed last year.. the press find a golden boy to focus on and they run with it.. will sit back and wait and see with all of this.. not feeling like it will happen.

      (Quote)

  36. AMF have words with your rags over there,Foxs News reporting C.Good has signed for toon £350000 🙂

      (Quote)

  37. I reckon the club sends out a few red herrings to keep the press busy.. while they quietly go about their transfer business.. Pardz said we had a couple of players near on wrapped up so lets see what transpires in a few days time when the window opens…
